With Passover almost here not only are Kosher wines in order, so too are Kosher beers. A client came in last week, and as he put a bottle of Kosher wine on the counter he said with a shrug, "I don't mind wine, but I'm much more of a niche beer drinker. I miss beer during Passover." But we don't have to forgo it.
Everything from chocolate, spices, maple syrup and oysters (in one case that I know of) has been used in addition to traditional ingredients to brew beer. Craft brews, especially, are known for including unusual and interesting components, but these additions aren't necessarily Kosher. So, for my fellow craft beer lovers there is a craft brewery that offers Kosher beer.
Shmaltz beer company produces a line of beers named "He'brew," all of which are certified Kosher, and we offer 3 of its delicious brews. First is
Genesis Ale, ($8.99) Shmaltz's first brew. A light, brown ale, this brew is crisp, smooth and perfectly balanced. The supple malt sweetness and pronounced hops are the product of German malts and English hops. If you want something refreshing, this brew is perfect.
For a selection with a little more body, we recommend the
Messiah Bold, ($8.99). This beer is a dark brown ale perfect for spring. For dark beer lovers, it can sometimes be hard to drink a thick, malty stout on an 85-degree day, much like it can be to drink a glass of full-bodied red wine on the beach in the sun. Brown ales are perfect for this scenario. Also very balanced, this brew shows rich, dark, malty flavors and a complex hop character in a medium body.

Finally, there is
Jewbelation 11, ($5.99, 22 oz). Every year since its 8th anniversary, He'brew has produced a brew celebrating its birthday. Jewbelation 11 is an American Strong Ale with 11% alcohol that packs some punch! Creamy, it has a slight undertone of chocolate, figgy fruit and a touch of molasses. This toasty concoction has great depth of flavor. Great for pairing with hearty lamb!
Enjoy!
