  • Greetings!

Well, this upcoming weekend marks the unofficial end to the summer season, and each year at this time, the Rhode Island Philharmonic plays in East Greenwich on the field of the Eldredge Elementary School, a festivity known as the Summer's End Concert, marking this unofficial close. As a frequent patron of this event, it is a lovely time. If you have plans to go to the concert, which usually begins at 8 pm, stop into the shop first for our Friday evening wine tasting (5-8 PM). To celebrate our own end to summer, we will be offering a 5% discount on the wines that we will be tasting this weekend. We look forward to seeing you.

    Cheers! Jessica and Nino Granatiero

September 28th Artist Reception and Wine Tasting. Please join us on Friday, September 28 for an opening reception and wine tasting to welcome the striking works of East Greenwich Artist Sandra Basile. Basile will share her experiences and discuss her works from 5 - 8 PM. Basile first studied photography in the early 1970s. Through high school, she developed her own film and photographs, and her camera went everywhere with her during college and art school years. In 1979 she worked with the International Center of Photography and UNESCO at a photography symposium in Venice, Italy. She studied with (and was a translator for) Pedro Meyer, Marie Cosindas and Lucas Samaras. During the 1980s, she worked in a New York City art gallery that represented many artists including the painter and photographer David Hockney. Her experiences also include printmaking, collage and mosaic. In 2002, she completed a 5 x 7- foot glass mosaic installation for the atrium of St. Luke's Church in East Greenwich. We are thrilled to have Sandra, so please stop in to meet her.

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Naked Riesling

    • 2006 Snoqualmie Vineyards Naked Riesling, Washington. Snoqualmie is one of the first wineries in Washington to make wines from certified organically grown grapes. Nestled in Prosser, Washington, the town resembles many small farming communities in the Pacific Northwest. Its Naked Riesling is made with minimal intervention, certified organically grown grapes and in a certified organic facility. The wine offers fresh aromas of apples and pears, followed by the same juicy flavors on the palate and a lingering spice and honey finish. ($10.99)

    • 2006 Fratelli Brovia Roero Arneis Piedmont, Italy. First and foremost, Brovia is an advocate of all that is good, proper and traditional in Piedmont. Brovia has preached these tenets for more than a century, since the winery was founded in 1863. The wines are classic in their own right. Brovia is adamant in its philosophy of producing only top quality wines that are standard bearers for their respective terroirs. (You may know the Brovia Barolos that we carry.) Brovia's Roero Arneis (Arneis being the grape) is pure and has very focused white fruit and floral elements. The acid structure is precise, but not piercing, and provides a crisp, cool stream of lemon mist, lime ice and spritz of mint-enhanced white peach. A classy , unoaked Arneis from importer Neal Rosenthal. ($26.49)

    • 2004 Chateau St. Jean de Lavaud, Pomerol. This is another great selection from Importer Neal Rosenthal that comes from the famed Pomerol region in Bordeaux but that escapes the infamous high priced tag. With only 500 total cases produced, this wine is of limited availability. So when we heard this and then tasted the wine, we immediately placed our order. The front label dons the number 1.1 which is the size of this vineyard in hectares. In acres, that is only 2.5, a vineyard size almost unheard of. Comprised mostly of Merlot with some Cabernet Franc, the wine is dark and deep with plummy, black cherry and cassis notes, a silky middle, and a long finish. Destined for longevity, it would be hard not to drink it now because it's truly that good. Across the board we loved it, and with only several cases in RI it's one to have. ($36.99)

    • 2004 Ridge Monte Bello, California. The 2004 vintage of Ridge's Monte Bello red blend has just been released, and it will be arriving at The Savory Grape on Wednesday. A consistent producer with reliable wines, Ridge's 2004 Monte Bello is a luscious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Another one that is highly sought after, this wine is a keeper for 15+ years. Please call us to reserve a bottle if you are interested in this wine. Only a small amount is available. ($134.99)

    Weekend Wine Tastings

Friday, August 31 (5 pm to 8 pm) Renato Ratti Tasting

    • 2006 Renato Ratti Dolcetto d'Alba, Colombè, Italy. Dolcetto is a great red wine for late summer/early fall because it produces a light-to-medium bodied wine. Renato Ratti's Dolcetto d'Alba has a rich ruby red color with an abundance of violet reflections. It exudes an intense bouquet with trace scents of cherry and ripe plum. Balanced, fresh, fragrant and lush, this Dolcetto leaves you with a pleasant after taste. A great wine for all tables, pairing particularly well with Italian style appetizers and fresh cheeses. ($14.99)
    • 2006 Renato Ratti Barbera d'Alba, Torriglione, Italy. Rich in body and in color, this single vineyard Barbera is warm and robust, pleasantly tart when young, and definitely a wine suitable to aging. The particular soils of La Morra yield to it a measured acidity along with superb elegance. Its resolute bouquet is accompanied by trace scents of ripe plum and an undercurrent of mixed spices. Its quite full of flavor with long persistence. ($20.99)
    • 2006 Renato Ratti Nebbiolo d'Alba, Ochetti, Italy. Ahhh, the classic varietal of the famed Barolos and Barbarescos, and upon tasting this Nebbiolo, confirmatory smiles drew across our faces. We knew this was a keeper. Class and vivacity are the distinguishing characteristics of this Nebbiolo d'Alba. Slightly faded ruby red in color, it has a fine, delicate, and persistent bouquet with characteristic scents of strawberry and raspberry. On the palate this wine is pleasant, velvety, and, all at once, light and full with dried cherry flavors. A great wine to pair with red meats, grilled or on a spit. ($20.99)

Saturday, September 1st (3 pm to 7 pm) Organic Selections

    • 2006 Snoqualmie Vineyards Naked Riesling, Washington State. ($10.99)
    • 2004 Parducci Merlot Mendocino County, California. Parducci is a family owned vineyard whose winemaking roots began in Italy. Its 2004 Merlot was produced primarily from fruit grown in three high-quality Mendocino vineyards. It was then blended with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in a combination of French and American oak. It boasts complex aromas of sweet black cherries and plums mingled with mint tea. On the palate, the wine's medium-bodied flavors are reminiscent of cherries with a slight spiciness, adding savor and zest. A fine match for herb-roasted chicken with plum sauce, grilled beef on a bed of arugula with shaved parmigiana, or even turkey chili. ($10.99)
    • 2004 Parducci Petite Syrah Mendocino County, California. Petite Syrah is quite often characterized but its rich, deep flavors, and the Parducci selection adheres to that notion. It has full flavors of sweet, ripe fruit, and cocoa which are complimented by blackberry notes and soft, supple tannins. It is great for pairing with foods of equal heft. ($10.99)
