  • Greetings!

At a time when many people are out-of-town on vacation and things are typically calmer, this week has been bustling both onsite at The Savory Grape and on the road. We have received a plethora of new arrivals at the shop about which we are ecstatic and think you will be too. These arrivals, including Australia's Mollydooker and California's B.R. Cohn, are at the top of their game. Additionally, a portion of The Savory Grape was on the road in Sonoma this past weekend to visit some vineyards we feature as well as scope out some new selections for the fall. That excursion we will share with you next week.

Also, we have a special guest visiting us for this Friday's tasting. Michael Petrizzo of Vias Wines, one of the most renowned Italian wine importers in the U.S., will be with us Friday evening to showcase and educate you on some special selections. See Friday's tasting selections below for wines we will taste.

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Two Left Feet

  • 2006 Mollydooker "Two Left Feet" Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia. Mollydooker wines are produced by Sparky and Sarah Marquis, a left handed couple from Australia. Together they got their start back in 1994 when they consulted for Sarah's parents winery. From there, they partnered with importer Dan Phillips to create the well-known Marquis Phillips label. The left-handed couple then got the chance to produce wines under their own proprietary label: Mollydooker (Australian slang for a left hander). They have created a multitiered system for making and selling their wines, which range in price from delicious $20 wines in their "Lefty" series, all the way up to the other-worldly Velvet Glove, weighing in at $175 a bottle. Mollydooker's Two Left Feet is a blend of Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine boasts an inky purple color, superb intensity, a big, sweet, full bodied nose of creme de cassis, white chocolate, blackberry liqueur, and a spectacular, voluptuous texture. This is a big, powerful, classic south Australian red to be drunk over the next 3 years. ($20.99)
  • 2006 Mollydooker "Maitre D" Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia. Another great wine for Mollydooker - the 2006 Maitre D is a superb Cabernet offering creamy crème de cassis notes intermixed with hints of licorice, new wood, and spices. This full bodied red has great intensity. Pure, dense, and opulent, as well as a voluptuous, the fruit flavors continue through to the long, full finish that also displays notions of roasted coffee and white chocolate. It's hard to believe a Cabernet Sauvignon can hit this level of quality at this price point. Mollydooker wines are meant to be consumed young, but it's hard to believe these knock out reds won't last for 5-10 years. ($20.99)
  • 2004 Ben Marco Expresivo, Mendoza . "Expresivo" is Spanish for "Expressive" and that's exactly what this limited production wine is that recently rated 90 points by Wine Spectator. With only 500 cases (6 packs) produced and only five 6-packs allocated to RI, we managed to secure at least one 6-pack. For this wine, only the best blocks of old-vine fruit are used to create a blend that gives the purest expression of Mendoza. The grapevine illustrated on the label is a replica of an actual vine that was recently retired and which now resides in the tasting room where it greets winery guests. Made from Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, Syrah, and Tannat, the average age of all the vines is 36 years. The wine has been aged for 14 months in new French and second-use American barriques. Wafting aromas of red currants, red and black cherries, smoke and sweet vanilla oak explode from the glass. Layers of currant and black cherry fruit and notes of cocoa, nutmeg, and dark chocolate envelope the mouth nicely. It displays perfect balance, concentration and length loaded with fine, ripe tannins for having with food or for aging. But for those of us who want the full experience NOW and may be a bit impatient, decanting is a good idea. Expresivo should age beautifully for 10 - 15 years. ($35.99)
  • 2003 Chateau Quercy Grand Cru, Saint Emilion, Bordeaux. What a fine Grand Cru Bordeaux that any wine collector should have. A small production vineyard, Château Quercy is named for the slow growing evergreen oak trees found on the property. Situated on an ancient bed of the Dordogne River, the vines are up to 104 years old. The vineyards are comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. This is a beautiful wine with intense aromatics of blackberries mixed with currants, leather and a slight floral component. On the palate, it's deep and round with flavors of plum, black figs and smoke. A superb finish that stays with you for minutes, the wine delivers well more than its price. ($28.49)
  • 2005 B.R. Cohn Silver Label Cabernet Sauvignon. Bruce Cohn, founder of B.R. Cohn Winery, has embraced a lifelong passion for Northern California's wine country and its bounty. And an equally strong passion for music led to a parallel career in the music industry as the manager for one of rock 'n' roll's perennially favorite American bands, The Doobie Brothers. B.R. Cohn's 2005 Silver Label Cabernet Sauvignon reflects a blending of grapes grown from its Olive Hill Estate Vineyard and select North Coast vineyards. This combination offers full, rich flavors of berry, cassis and black cherry with hints of vanilla in the background. Aging in French oak adds complexity and depth, resulting in a high quality Cabernet Sauvignon with great value. ($24.99)
  • Weekend Wine Tastings
    Vias Wines

Friday, July 20 (5 pm to 8 pm) A Special Visit from Vias Wine Imports

2004 Argiano Non Confunditur, Tuscany. Argiano is well known for its great Brunello, but you will be greatly impressed as well with its Tuscan red Non Confunditur. With deep ruby hues, it has rich aromas of red berries and soft, smoky toast. This full-bodied wine is big and rich with ripe notes of raspberry, cinnamon and plum. The inherent sweetness of the Merlot acts as a bridge between the firm earthiness of the Sangiovese grape, the spicy black currant of the Cabernet and the warm red fruit of the Syrah. It is a terrific pair for pastas with rich meat sauces and mushroom-based sauces. ($23.99)
2006 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner, Alto Adige. From the Alto Adige region of Italy this wine is produced from 100% Kerner grapes. The color of this wine goes from pale straw yellow with green highlights to pale gold. Full of pear and citrus aromas and full of body, this wine is overwhelmingly refreshing. Its perfect with antipasto and shellfish based dishes. ($19.99)
2005 Tenuta Luisa Sauvignon, Friuli. From Italy's Friuli region, this wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Pale gold in color, the bouquet of this wine is refined and typical of the variety, with herbaceous notes and hints of citrus and apples. Well balanced and structured with excellent acidity, the wine pairs well with seafood risotto as well as various flavorful other dishes with seafood and crustaceans. ($18.49)
2005 Marenco Brachetto d' Acqui. What a perfect way to end the tasting with Brachetto d'Acqui. Made from the Brachetto varietal, this wine is a beautiful red with pinkish undertones. It offers a smooth scent of roses with sweet flavors of crushed strawberry. Not just for dessert, this wine can be enjoyed at anytime. It's a lovely match for strawberry shortcake or any other strawberry dessert, including chocolate cake with strawberry glaze. ($23.49)

Saturday, July 21 (3 pm to 7 pm) Argentinian Selections

2004 Las Perdices Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina. This is a wine of great character, depth and body. For Malbec lovers and full red wine lovers, this selection is divine. Deep and greatly concentrated with full flavors of plum, black cherry and raspberry, the wine envelopes the mouth and gives a succulent, silky mouth feel. ($16.49)
2005 Tilia Malbec/Syrah, Argentina. Tilia, the Latin name for Linden, is a traditional tree throughout the wine country of Mendoza. Its flowers are used to make a popular herbal tea with calming properties. The Tilia wines are made at Bodegas Esmeralda, a Catena family winery in eastern Mendoza. The nose is full of rich black fruit aromas with light earth notes and a touch of roasted coffee. The mouthfeel is full and sweet, with juicy black cherry fruit flavors, a touch of chocolate and sweet spice from light oak aging. This finish is long and lingering, with ripe, velvety tannins. ($10.99)
