  • Greetings!

We are looking forward to sharing the evening with many of you this Saturday at the Fall Charity Wine Festival. What better way to kick off the upcoming holidays than with many fine wines, food, friends and fantastic silent auction items on which to bid. (Since I get a sneak peak at the packages, I think many of the items will serve as great holiday gifts. Click here to view the full list of donors. ) With the constant negativity around us regarding our bleak economy, this event gives us something positive to think about - knowing that all the profits from the ticket and silent auction sales will go to the RI Community Action Association to help low-income Rhode Islanders have a better life this fall. For those of you unable to attend, you will be missed. (A parking lot is available on Division Street across from the Armory, where the event is located.)

Because I know you may be time constrained, like me, during the holidays, we are republishing last week's article that includes our wine recommendations for your Thanksgiving Feast. Remember we are always here to make recommendations based on your specific meal, budget and tastes, so please stop in or call if you would like to talk about wines for your menu.

And when you are ready to think about gift giving, forget the malls, traffic and even wrapping paper! The Savory Grape will help you simplify this holiday season. We are happy to help select wines to pair with your meals or conduct a wine tasting, which is a fun twist to a typical party. All you have to do is invite and enjoy! A wine basket or wine club membership is also a great holiday gift for your clients, friends, family, dogwalker, nanny or boss, and we will deliver or ship to their home or office, so you don't have to fret. Let us make your holidays less stressful! Stay tuned also for special promotions the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Enjoy, Jessica, Nino & The Savory Grape Team

Thanksgiving Wine Tasting. To help you prepare for your Thanksgiving feast, we will hold a special wine tasting at Main Street Coffee in EG on Monday, November 24th, from 7-9 PM to feature and taste New and Old World wines that will pair well with the many dishes of Thanksgiving. (These may just be the wines you will serve on Thanksgiving.) Only a couple of seats remain, so please make your reservation soon. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at MSC (885-8787) or The Savory Grape (886-9463).

Rhode Island Food Bank. With the holidays approaching, it is important that we remember to give back. Therefore, throughout the month of November we will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank at the shop. Actually the EG merchants and Wickford merchants are competing in this food drive to see which town can collect the most for the RICFB. So please feel free to drop off your nonperishables in the bin in the front of the store.

    Thanksgiving Wine Recommendations

    White Wines

    • 2006 Snoqualmie Sauvignon Blanc, Washington. Organically grown, this Washington State Sauvignon Blanc is full of bright citrus & melon flavors that leave the mouth with a mouthwatering feeling. For a fresh white that will pair with different salads and vegetable dishes, this is a value selection that will accommodate many palates. ($8.99)
    • 2003 Darting Riesling Kabinett, Germany. Displaying inviting aromas of peach and apricot, this Riesling has softened over time giving it an off-dry feel with a lovely, crisp acidity and minerality. This wine is just the thing to kick your turkey up a notch. ($13.99)
    • 2007 Toscolo Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Italy. This light-medium bodied white wine has a delicately aromatic bouquet of white flowers, pears and honeysuckle and a full-flavored palate rich in citrus and almond nuances. Balance is key to this wine as it relates to food pairing, not sweet, yet not overly acidic or dry. Also, it is well suited for sipping while waiting for that turkey thermometer to pop up. ($16.99)
    • 2006 Marc Kreydenwiess Andlau Riesling, Alsace, France. The Kreydenweiss Andlau Riesling is an extremely delicate, dry and mineral wine. This wine has been hand crafted in a traditional style and with only 700 cases produced it is a special wine, perfect for Thanksgiving. ($24.49)
    • 2004 Philippe Colin Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru, France. This white Burgundy (Chardonnay grape) will make your holiday feast extra special. Ripe fruit flavors of pear unfold on the palate with a background of cream and smoked oak. Over detailed flavors display overall ripeness and a mouth coating that is exceptionally long. ($71.49)

    Red Wines

    • 2007 Cesari Duetorri Pinot Noir, Italy. This wine shows the bright delightful side of Pinot with a spicy bouquet of black cherry and strawberry. The wine floats across the palate with a display of soft fruit flavors followed by soft tannins. Its velvety smooth texture is irresistible. ($9.99)
    • 2005 Chateau Tour D'Auron Rouge. This beautifully structured Bordeaux offers cassis and chocolate on the nose. It has strong hints of black fruit that is nicely balanced. Velvety smooth, it would pair well with sweet potatoes and a hearty sausage stuffing. ($15.99)
    • 2006 Schug Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, California. This Pinot Noir is complex with a rich bouquet full of cherries, berries and hint of spicy new oak. Flavors of bright cherry, currant and strawberry are followed by a spicy, smooth texture and an elegant finish. A special wine for a special holiday. ($23.49)
    • 1998 Gianni Voerzio "la Serra" Barolo, Italy. From the La Serra vineyard, this Barolo has received 90 points by WS. It has a lovely perfume of roses, blackberries & raspberries. It's full-bodied with ripe & satisfying fruit, firm yet round tannins & a long, fruity finish. This takes Thanksgiving to an entirely different level. ($91.99)

    Dessert Wines

    • 2006 Easton Late Harvest Zinfandel, California. You may remember when we first brought this wine to your attention several weeks ago. It is definitely one for our Thanksgiving table. Picked ultra-ripe, it has rich, raspberry milk chocolate flavors that excite the palate and offer an attractive spiciness. Please try this with the Thanksgiving dessert that doesn't fit the traditional pumpkin pie category - anything chocolate. ($23.99)
    • 2006 Domaine de Fenouillet Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, France. The Muscat for this wine is picked at optimum levels of maturity to achieve maximum sugar concentration. This lovely, light desert wine has aromas and flavors of peaches and vanilla and is a must have with pumpkin pie, creme brulee and fruit tarts. ($23.99)
    • The Black Chook Sparkling Shiraz, Australia. Want the best of both worlds? This wine offers it all! A full bodied offering that combines attributes of fruit with tannin, sweetness and bubbles to deliver rich concentrated flavors and a full and rewarding palate. If you think outside the box, this is a selection to consider. ($17.99)

    This Week's Savory Selections
    delectus dogs

Delectus Winery is a family-owned winery in the Napa Valley that handcrafts premium-quality red wines from select vineyards. Delectus prides itself on passion for the highest quality vineyards, grapes, wine and, of course people. Each and every taste of Delectus wine is an experience, a history, a laugh, a familiarity and a love for what's good in life.
In 2002, Gerhard Reisacher, owner/winemaker of Delecuts, created a Merlot- Cabernet driven blend, Dog-Gone Good, to honor the Reisacher's famous (and infamous) family dog, Flash. Flash was such a big part of the winery that fans of Delectus began asking when Flash would get his own label. On his 10th birthday, he got it. With the popularity of these delicious wines, two more vintages followed: 2003 Dog In Style and 2004 Dirty Old Dog. Each wine is dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. A vertical of the 2002, 2003 and 2004 vintages, each bottle features Flash on the label! A cute label yes, but these wines are serious and for the avid collector/wine drinker.

    • 2002 Dog Gone Good. Dog Gone Good displays aromas of blackberry, pomegranate, and oak. The palate is soft, complex, and has generous fruit. Still somewhat young, the finish is dominated by Cabernet. 62% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Syrah and Petit Sirah.
    • 2003 Dog In Style. Dog In Style features aromas of Cointreau, cedar, sandalwood, and black olive with high tones of boysenberry. The mouth exudes cinnamon, citrus and ripe plum flavors; the palate is condensed at the core with a polished finish. 51% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Sirah and 6% Syrah.
    • 2004 Dirty Old Dog. Dirty Old Dog has initial aromas of clove, grappa and blackberry pulp folded into and pomegranate. The palate features juicy cherry, chocolate truffle, hints of clove and a long, silky finish. 82% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Sirah.

These selections are showing great now and will continue to improve over the next 5-8 years. You can purchase each bottle separately for $41.99/btl., or you can purchase the vertical at a discounted price of $111.99 (no further discounts may be applied to the vertical.) This vertical is great if you're a collector or buying for a collector. Fun, they truly over deliver for the price.

2007 Tomero Torrontes, Argentina. The grape Torrontes is truly taking on a name for itself. Young and vibrant, the wine has lovely aromas on the nose of peach, orange blossoms and flowers. A fruity wine without being sweet, it has rich flavors of peach, grapefruit, tangerine, and honey with a mouthwatering acidity on the finish. This South American selection will be a great accompaniment to Thanksgiving this year. ($15.99)

    Weekend Wine Tastings

    Friday, November 14th (5 to 8 PM)
New Favorites From Down Under. (10% off this evening's tasting wines.)

    • 2005 Bleasdale "Mulberry Tree" Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia. This Cabernet Sauvignon from Longhorne Creek exhibits a wonderful bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, cedar and roses. The palate is soft and sweet with inviting dark berry flavors and gentle tannins. Enjoy this Aussie Cab now or over the next 5 years. ($18.49)
    • 2005 Bleasdale "Bremerview" Shiraz, Australia. "Bremerview" Shiraz is jam packed with flavors of blackberries, ripe plums and fragrant spice notes. This wine packs a punch and will certainly leave its mark on your mouth. Over time, the wine will develop smooth earthy and chocolate characteristics. ($18.49)

    Saturday, November 15th (3 to 7 PM)
New Wines from the Coastal Wine Trail.

    • 2005 Running Brook Estate Chardonnay. This cool climate New England style Chardonnay is well balanced with a full array of acid and fruit. Aged for 2 years in old French oak, it displays full bodied, yet soft oak flavors that are accompanied by a clean, crisp fruity taste. ($16.99)
    • 2003 Running Brook Cabernet Franc/Merlot. Two of the great Bordeaux varietals both lend themselves well to growing in New England's cool climate. This unique blend, with its European reminiscent style, makes it compatible with a wide variety of foods. This lightly, acid-driven wine, combined with balancing light tannins and fruity richness, tantalizes the nose while leaving a delectable impression on the palate. This wine is a blended of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot. ($13.49)

All wines during our weekend tastings are paired with fresh cheeses from Whole Foods Market in Cranston. To obtain information on the cheeses that have been selected, please stop in for a tasting or visit Whole Foods.
