  • Greetings!

As I write this week's newsletter, the wind is roaring outside, and the weather is simply nasty and raw. It's not a perfect night in which to go out but it is a wonderful evening to sit by the fire with a hearty red wine. Choose your favorite or select a new one from our Savory Selections below. This week and during the next few, you will notice an expanded list of wines with abbreviated tastings notes in the Savory Selections, which are our newest wines from recent meetings and tastings with vineyard owners and winemakers. We hope you will share in our excitement for these wines as well as for this Saturday's 2004 Pertinace Barbaresco tasting at the shop with Doug Macleod, importer for Italy's Mionetto. (These are selections you do not want to miss tasting.)

Pertinace is a small cooperative of only 15 growers in Barbaresco, Italy who are driven by the desire to make great wines. Traditionalists, Pertinace uses a combination of low yields in the vineyards and stainless steel and larger oak casks in the winery to allow the character of its fruit to fully express itself.

Critical acclaim has followed, with good reviews from the Wine Advocate, Steve Tanzer and Gambero Rosso, culminating in the 2000 Barbaresco "Marcarini" being chosen among the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2003.

On Saturday, November 1, from 3-7 PM, we will taste 2 of the amazing 2004 Barbarescos-the Normale or regular Barbaresco & the 'Macarini,' a Barbaresco from a small 2.5ha (5 acre) vineyard. For anyone thinking about wines for the Thanksgiving table, we also will taste Pertinace's delicious Dolcetto, Roero Arnies (a rare Piedmont white grape) and Barolo. Make every effort to come out to East Greenwich and visit us to enjoy these stellar selections that will be presented on the romantic backdrop of a limited edition series of archival quality photographs by Artist Stephen Mancini.

Enjoy, Jessica & Nino Granatiero and The Savory Grape Team

The Savory Grape News & Events

Women and Wine. 'Tis the Season for client entertaining. From not just ordering wine but to selecting the most appropriate wine, the pressures of client entertainment are real. On Tuesday, November 18 from 5-7 PM, The Savory Grape along with Leading Women, a professional women's organization, hope to take that stress away with an interactive evening of learning wine and food pairings and recommending wines with confidence. (Men are welcome.) You will sample wines and enjoy appetizers that complement the selections. We will discuss "executive etiquette" tips that you can use to enhance your company's image and share best practices as you make client services a top priority in your business. The event will be held at Fleming's Steakhouse and Wine Bar within the Westin in Providence. To make a reservation for the event, please contact Leading Women at lisa.bergeron@leadingwomen.biz or at 789-0441. The cost is $38 per person.

Thanksgiving Wine Tasting. Although it seems far away, Thanksgiving will be here in no time. To help you prepare for your feast, we will hold a special wine tasting at Main Street Coffee in EG on Monday, November 24th, from 7-9 PM to feature and taste New and Old World wines that will pair well with the many dishes of Thanksgiving. (These may just be the wines you will serve on Thanksgiving.) This event sells out quickly, so please make your reservation early. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at MSC (885-8787) or The Savory Grape (886-9463).

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Segries

2006 Chateau de Segries Cotes du Rhone, France. This blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignane is richly fruity, peppery and spicy, with copious black and red fruit flavors. This medium- bodied wine is best consumed over the next 2-3 and is a great partner for roasted poultry. ($13.49)

2007 Giraudon Bourgogne Aligote, France. This wine comes from a small Burgundian producer named Marcel Giraudon, based just outside of Chablis. This Aligote is fresh, clean & minerally with beautifully, pure ripeness of fruit. This is a great alternative to Chardonnay, while still giving you a medium-full body. ($13.99).

2006 Nine Stones Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia. Classic and characteristic of Barossa Valley, this red is big, bold and smooth with layers of ripe blackberries, dark cherries and luscious chocolate, mocha and macerated fruit characters. Definitely one for a cold, fall evening. ($15.99)

2007 Marcato La Barche Soave, Italy. This single vineyard Soave has a great bouquet of flowers & white fruits. Delicate on the palate with orange, apricot & lemon fruit flavors, a fresh acidity & soft mineral notes, the mouth is round to make the finish ever so nice. ($16.49)

2005 Conti Zecca Donna Marzia Negramaro, Italy. Donna Marzia Negramaro, from Italy's Salento area, is the perfect sipping, sit by the fire wine. Aromas of ripe blackberry, raspberry and a touch of earthiness lead to similar flavors on the smooth palate with additional hints of coffee. This would be great with ribs and other BBQ items. ($11.99)

2006 Codirosso Chianti, Italy. The Codirosso Chianti has an intense vinous bouquet with hints of violets and dark cherry fruit. This is a classic Italian wine with rustic notes that dovetail well with cherry and plum flavors. Well balanced and dry, this Chianti is great with grilled, braised and roasted meats. ($13.99)

2006 Cerejeiras Red, Estremadura, Portugal. For a simple, easy drinking soft red that is different yet great quality for the price, this one is the pick. Made from the three grapes Castelo, Aragonez and Tinta Miuda, this medium bodied red offers nice cherry, raspberry and cinnamon flavors that we think are irresistible. ($8.99)

2006 Marc Kreydenwiess Andlau Riesling, Alsace, France. The Kreydenweiss Andlau Riesling is an extremely delicate, dry and minerally wine. This wine has been hand crafted in a traditional style and with only 700 cases produced it is a special wine, perfect for Thanksgiving. ($24.49)

2007 Domaine Cherrier Sancerre, France. Citrus aromas with peach notes fill the nose while on the palate a hint of melon and freshly cut grass tantalize the mouth. Cool, clean and vibrant with racy acidity and a nice mineral backbone, this is a Sauvignon Blanc to enjoy year round. ($22.99)

    Weekend Wine Tastings

With the first sip you'll find yourself instantly clawing for more. ($25.99)
