  • Greetings!

One thing that we think sets The Savory Grape apart from others is our selection of wines. We go out of our way to find wines that are unique, obscure and produced in low quantities. If you did not know already, we taste every wine, from the everyday value wines to the expensive, cellar selections, before they find homes on our shelves. We do this to make sure that each wine we sell is indeed special and worthy of landing in your hands. In the last few months and even more so in the past couple of weeks, we have sampled many new wines, meeting with importers, vineyard owners and winemakers, and are eager to share them with you. From the renowned Winebow importer to the Eagle's Trace vineyard, some of these new wines, listed in the Savory Selections below, will be available this week. However, to share as many of our newest selections with you, we kept the tasting notes brief. We hope you will enjoy.

Additionally, we are amazed that there is a countdown for the upcoming holidays. When you are ready to begin thinking about gift giving, forget the malls, traffic and even wrapping paper! The Savory Grape will help you simplify this season. We are happy to help you select wines or conduct a wine tasting, and we can help you develop a menu and wine pairings and work with your caterer. All you do - invite and enjoy! A wine basket or wine club membership (available online) is also a great holiday gift for your clients, friends, family, dogwalker, catsitter or boss, and we will deliver or ship to your home or office so you don't have to fret. Let us help make your holidays less stressful!

    Enjoy, Jessica & Nino Granatiero

The Savory Grape News & Events
    Mancini

Artist Opening. We are thrilled to welcome the works of Artist Stephen Mancini. From now through the end of the year, Mancini will be featuring new paintings and archival photographs, including his "Bella Tuscany" Collection, throughout the shop. Please join us this Saturday, October 25 from 5-8 PM to welcome Stephen during an opening celebration and wine tasting. Wine importer and distributor Fatima Periera will also be with us to welcome Stephen and taste various New World wines. Stephen is an artist and photographer of national recognition, who also earned a coveted "Clio" award for film. His work is included in galleries in Newport, Boston, Block Island and Naples Florida as well as in corporate and private collections across America. To visit Stephen on the web, click here.

Wine Festival Update. We are thrilled to share that on the night of the November 15th Wine Festival Peter Merriam, owner of Merriam Vineyards, will join us. Merriam Vineyards produces award winning wines from California's Sonoma County. This boutique winery is a staff favorite of The Savory Grape, and we look forward to having him spend the evening with us. We also have had a great response from many businesses that plan to donate items for the festival's silent auction. Please click here to see a list of donors thus far. (This list is updated weekly.) If you would like to access the list at a later time, it can be found on the News and Events page of our website. All profits will be donated to the RI Community Action Association.

Women and Wine. 'Tis the Season for client entertaining. From not just ordering wine but to selecting the most appropriate wine, the pressures of client entertainment are real. On Tuesday, November 18 from 5-7 PM, The Savory Grape along with Leading Women, a professional women's organization, hope to take that stress away with an interactive evening of learning wine and food pairings and recommending wines with confidence. You will sample wines and enjoy appetizers that complement the selections. We will discuss "executive etiquette" tips that you can use to enhance your company's image and share best practices as you make client services a top priority in your business. The event will be held at Fleming's Steakhouse and Wine Bar within the Westin in Providence. To make a reservation for the event, please contact Leading Women at info@leadingwomen.biz or at 789-0441. The cost is $38 per person.

Save the Date. Although it seems far away, Thanksgiving will be upon us in no time. To help you prepare for your feast, we will hold a special tasting at Main Street Coffee in EG on Monday, November 24th, from 7-9 PM to feature and taste New and Old World wines that pair well with the many dishes of Thanksgiving. This event sells out quickly, so we recommend making your reservation early. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at MSC (885-8787) or The Savory Grape (886-9463).

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Jargon

2007 Jargon Pinot Noir, California. Since tasting new wines is a big part of what we do, we often get excited about the new selections, the same internal excitement you may get when landing a new client, job, car, etc. Well, you get the point. In this case the Jargon Pinot Noir is one of those selections. With its bright and seductive flavors of black cherry, strawberries and dark cocoa, this silky smooth Pinot has quickly become a new staff favorite, especially for the price. ($11.49)

2006 Puerto Infinito Carmenere Reserve, Chile. Silky, smooth and inviting, this Reserve Carmenere has beautiful aromas of dark red fruits, plum, spice and a touch of chocolate. In the mouth the wine envelopes the tongue with similar flavors, a lush mouthfeel and long, lingering finish. This is a great wine to keep you warm in these chilly fall months. ($11.49)

2006 Hook & Ladder "The Tillerman," Russian River Valley, California. Tillerman is a unique blend of Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese from a single vineyard, the Los Amigos Ranch. The wine has multiple layers of lush red fruit combined with black berry and hints of pepper, finished off with a hint of dusty cocoa. Divine! ($16.49)

2007 Finca El Origen Reserva Malbec, Argentina. Malbec hit the scene a few years ago, and its popularity just continues to grow. This Reserva has intense aromas of ripe fruits especially plums, blue berries and strawberries accompanied with cinnamon notes. The palate offers similar flavors with soft tannins and a pleasant finish. ($11.49)

2004 Livernano Chianti Classico, Italy. It has been quite some time since I have been this excited about a Chianti. Livernano's Chianti Classico has a fresh nose of violets, red fruit and a touch of toffee. In the mouth the wine is lively with great acidity, round tannins and full flavors. With the first sip you'll find yourself instantly clawing for more. ($25.99)

2007 Tramin Sauvignon Alto Adige, Italy. Sauvignon Blanc and Italy may seem like an unlikely pair, but to me its sounds like a match made in heaven. From high up in Italy's renowned Alto Adige region, this Sauvignon is elegant and aromatic. It expresses distinct flavors of melon, grapefruit and grass, followed by spicy green pepper and gooseberry notes. 87 points by Robert Parker. ($15.49)

2007 Luzon Verde Monastrell, Spain. If adjectives like meaty, gamey and earthy are used to describe a wine and you find that intriguing, then you should stop in and talk to us. You don't have to, really, but what you may want to do is try a bottle of the Luzon Verde Organic. Made from 100% Monastrell, it is one to knock your socks off. ($9.49)

2007 Maculan Pino & Toi, Italy. Made from 60% Tocai, 25% Pinot Bianco and 15% Pinot Grigio, Pino & Toi is intensely perfumed on the nose, offering refreshing notes of citrus and apples. It is well balanced on the palate with loads of fresh peaches and pears, followed by a crisp and fragrant finish. If you feel like you're stuck in a rut with the same whites, try the Pino & Toi. This may just be the wine to help bail you out. ($14.99)

2005 Eagle's Trace Latitude 38, Napa Valley, CA. This is one of our newest favorite vineyards that produces mid-higher priced, full bodied reds. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Merlot and to us easily beats out many red blends over $100. It scored a whopping 91 points and would be a great gift for any avid collector. We have only 6 bottles of this. (We also have only 6 bottles each of its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which are stunning too.) ($78.99)

    Weekend Wine Tastings

We would like to thank Whole Foods Market in Cranston for providing cheeses to pair with our wines during all our weekend tastings. To obtain information on the cheeses, some often from RI's Narragansett Creamery, please stop in for a tasting or visit Whole Foods.
    Friday, October 24th (5 to 8 PM)
A Showcase of European Selections by Ed Addiss, President of Wine Traditions Ltd. Ed will be with us to share a variety of European selections from his portfolio including wines from France's Bordeaux and Burgundy regions that will be nice partners for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

    Saturday, October 25th (3 to 8 PM)
Stephen Mancini Artist Opening with Importer Fatima Pereira of Best Beverage.
Please join us to welcome Artist Stephen Mancini and Importer Fatima Periera who will feature wines from Norman Vineyeards, Schug Winery and Finca El Origen Winery. Pereira and Mancini will visit with us from 5-8 PM.
