The Savory Grape Wine Shop Newsletter |

|
Greetings!
As you might have noticed in last week's newsletter,
the first paragraph of the newsletter was entirely cut
off; it just kept you hanging, like a primetime television
show continued until the following week. I honestly
have no explanation. The full paragraph was there
when I hit Send, and then "poof" the HTML code was
gone. I had a terrible feeling in my stomach when I
saw the unfinished paragraph staring at me from
my Inbox. It was almost the same feeling I
experienced quite some time ago as a journalist when
I forgot to ask the spelling of a woman's name on who
I was writing a cover page feature story - the main
journalism No No. Thank gosh you are a little more
forgiving (or at least I hope so).
Now, since that's behind me, we are really excited
about our various events this fall - continued wine
dinners with Siena Restaurant, special in-store guest
tastings, Monday night wine tastings at Main Street
Coffee, and of course our Charity Fall Wine Festival.
(Please see information on tickets below in
the News &
Events section.) Also, with delight, we recently have
attended industry wine tastings, meeting winemakers
and vineyard owners, and will continue to do so during
the next two weeks to find
some of the best, most unique wine offerings for you
this fall. So continue to review our Savory Selections
and In-Store Wine Tasting schedule
for some of these new, exciting arrivals. And as a
special welcome to the upcoming fall season, this
weekend during our in-store wine tastings, you will
have a chance to enter into a raffle to win two
vouchers, to be exchanged for two tickets, to Trinity
Rep's The Dreams of Antigone. For more
information on the performance, click here. We look forward to seeing you
this weekend, especially during our artist reception on
Saturday!
Cheers, The Savory Grape Team

This Week's Savory Selections |
 |
2005 Spencer Roloson Viognier, Knights Valley,
California. From a stunning vineyard with an
impressive lineup of wines, its 2005 Viognier is
elegantly rich and intense. It has
been barrel fermented on its lees (the residual, dead
yeast cells) for about 8 months in new and old oak
barrels, which add a nice creamy texture to the wine. It
shows stone fruit flavors (apricot and peach) that
integrate nicely with classic floral aromas. A bright
beam of acidity elevates the finish, supporting the rich
minerality of this wine. This is one to drink over the
next 2-3 years. ($33.99)
2006 Cloudline Pinot Gris, Oregon. From the
famed Drouhin family, the 2006
Cloudline Pinot Gris is a brilliant, golden-yellow color.
A rush of citrus fruits and white flowers, both in the
nose and on the palate, combines to make this a wine
of pure pleasure. With excellent texture and a strong
lift from the acidity, it suggests food pairings with every
sip. Try it with most shellfish, brie or blue cheeses,
sushi,
and spicy cuisine such as Thai and Indian. ($18.49)
2005 Chateau Gravat, Medoc, France. The
Medoc region of Bordeaux, France is situated on the
left bank of the Gironde River. The region spans from
the mouth of the river down south and includes the
four famous communes of St-Estephe, Pauillac, St.
Julien and Margaux. Chateau
Gravat is composed mostly of Cabernet Sauvignon
with Cabernet Franc and Merlot blended into it. The
nose
is full of rich red fruit aromas along with some hints of
earth and tobacco. The palate shows flavors of cherry,
plum and well-integrated oak with a long finish. A
great Bordeaux find.
($14.99)
2004 Barnwood 3200' Cabernet Sauvignon,
California. Barnwood Vineyards lie high atop the
southern Santa Barbara Mountains, nestled in the
picturesque Cuyama Valley. Crafted in a style that is
supple enough for enjoying alone, Barnwood wines
still retain a pure varietal character that you will find
pairs nicely with a wide range of cuisine from all over
the world. The 2004 3200' Cabernet Sauvignon has a
rich, deep, ruby glow with blackberry and spice
nuances on the nose. In the mouth cassis flavors give
balance along with hints of French oak aging as it
glides through a long finish, with firm tannins.
($17.99)

Weekend Wine Tastings |
 |
Friday, September 19th (5 to 8 PM) California wines for the changing season.
-
2004 Buzzard Tree Meritage, California.
The Buzzard Tree Meritage is a blend of mostly
Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with some
Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot added. This deep,
cuvee has enticing floral and complex aromas of ripe
cherries and cassis with spicy overtones of pepper
and nutmeg. Medium-to-full-bodied, the intense red
and black berry flavors are superbly balanced with a
nice, firm acidity. The lengthy finish coats your mouth,
due to its soft tannins that offer a final ending of soft
chocolate notes. This is a wine to drink throughout the
next 2 years. ($14.99)
-
2006 Pavilion Chardonnay, California.
The new vintage of Pavilion Chardonnay shows
inviting aromas
of pear, vanilla and toasty oak with hints of white
peach. In the mouth ripe fruit flavors of pear, caramel
apple and melon lead to a long, soft, lingering finish.
This medium-bodied Chardonnay is well-balanced
making it a pleasure to savor on its own or
enjoy with a wide variety of foods. ($12.49)
-
2004 Barnwood Cabernet Sauvignon, California.
Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory
Selections. ($17.99)
Saturday, September 20th (3 to 7 PM)
Please join us for a closing reception for Artist
Elena Avanesova.
-
2005 Chateau Gravat, Medoc, France.
Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory
Selections.
($14.99)
-
2007 Chateau de la Vieille Tour Blanc, Bordeaux,
France.
This white Bordeaux is a blend of predominantly
Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with a touch of
Muscadelle. Together the blend creates concentrated
aromas of citrus fruits, floral notes and hint of peach.
With similar characteristics on the palate, this dry
white has a round mouthfeel with great minerality and
a lengthy finishing leaving you begging for more. This
is a great white to help you transition into fall. Will pair
exceptionally well with shellfish, seafood and chicken
based dishes. ($11.99)
