  • Greetings!

Last week the 13th Summer's End Concert in EG featuring the RI Philharmonic Orchestra was held, and once again, it was a terrific event bringing forth many of the town's residents. We attended as residents and, like other local businesses, as proud sponsors of the event. As we sat and listened to the music with our family, we discussed the importance of businesses giving back to the community and the pride we felt being part of this great event. This year we also are sponsoring two local soccer teams and have given donations to numerous local organizations. Last year our Fall Wine Festival raised over $7,000 for the RI Food Bank. So as a business we support and give back.

A few weeks ago while ringing up a nice bottle of Vernaccia someone brusquely asked me why he should shop at The Savory Grape when he can save a buck or two online. Well, unwilling to engage in debate while others were waiting, I politely said "for the charming personality of The Savory Grape team," and continued bagging that terrific white before bidding him a pleasant evening. In addition to our unique wines and unparalleled customer service, we hope in time he will come to understand that supporting local businesses, which are part of the social fabric, helps support the local community and economy.

With that in mind, we hope you'll join us this Friday to welcome special guest Fatima Pereira of Best Beverage Wines, an importer and distributor of top rated Spanish & Portuguese wines as well as highly sought-after Napa wines. Fatima will share with us three Portuguese selections. And don't forget our Saturday in-store tasting of new California selections that are perfect for one of these fall-like evenings.

    Cheers, The Savory Grape Team

2008 Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau Pre-Orders. We know it's early to begin talking about Beaujolais Nouveau when the wine won't arrive until mid November. However we are putting in our order for the 2008 Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau on Monday, September 22nd for arrival by air in mid November. You may remember the demand for it last year and how quickly we sold out (within a few days) before Thanksgiving. Therefore, we are taking preorders for the wine to ensure those who want it will receive it. The cost per bottle is $14.99. (Yes it has gone up this year.) To preorder the 2008 Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau, please email your quantities to jessica@thesavorygrape.com or patrick@thesavorygrape.com by Sunday, September 21st. All orders received by that Sunday will have secured allocations when the wine arrives in November.

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Lyeth L

L de Lyeth Chardonnay, Sonoma, California. Sonoma County, one of California's most prestigious and historic wine-producing regions, provides superior fruit used in this creamy, silky style. The nose opens with honeydew melon, guava and hints of Granny Smith apple. On the palate, the wine is fruit forward, with seductive highlights of soft spice, pineapple and mango. This is a crisp, well-balanced wine with soft traces of vanilla and a buttery finish. ($11.99)

2004 Norman Vineyards Petit Sirah, Paso Robles, California. Dark, ripe and concentrated, this Petit Sirah is bold, big and beautiful. It has ample blackberry fruit with soft hints of cocoa and white pepper. Despite its jammy fruit (typical of the varietal) and an alcohol content that is 15 percent, the wine doesn't taste at all pruney or hot. This wine calls out for hearty food, such as ribs and other pork roasts, or even a Bolognese. One of our new favorites. ($21.99)

2007 Principessa Gavia, Gavi, Italy. Made from all Cortese grapes, sourced from the Gavi region, this white is considered one of the premier dry white wines of Italy. Superlative with a distinct personality, Principessa is fruity, fresh and crisp with a gentle acidity and balanced finish. It is an ideal accompaniment for shellfish and dovetails well with lighter fish and grilled chicken, as well as with the delicate flavor variations of Japanese cuisine. Put this against a lightly adorned piece of fish and you have a winner. ($16.99)

1998 Gianni Voerzio Barolo "la Serra," Italy. This single vineyard Barolo is quite the treat for any wine lover. Gianni Voerzio has been producing top notch Barolos for some time, and the 1998 is no exception. This wine has lovely perfumes of roses, blackberries and raspberries. It is full-bodied, with ripe and satisfying fruit, firm yet round tannins and a long, fruity finish. Truly a lovely wine to be enjoyed now through 2013. With only 755 cases of this wine made, it makes it a rare and fantastic treat. Wine Spectator: 90pts.
    (Special price $91.99, Reg. $101.99)
