Greetings!
This week I received some fantastic responses
to last week's newsletter article. It seems
many of you share my feelings about not
wanting to be constantly connected. You use
your cell phone for calling, occasionally
sending a text message or retrieving flight
information, and if really pressed, you take
a picture. But receiving wine alerts, ratings
and a newsletter and surfing the web via a
mobile device was not for your cell phone.
Nino says it's kind of like reading the
newspaper. How great is the experience
online? Don't you miss the feel of the paper
and the constant battle to fold it over just
right so you don't disturb the person sitting
next to you, whether at home, on business or
in a coffee shop? "It just isn't the same,"
he says.
However, being connected to The Savory Grape
does have its advantages. You find out first
about new arrivals (and can call in to
reserve bottles for pick-up or have them
delivered), special guest tasters, new local
artists on display, and which
weekend wine tasting (or both!) you want to
attend.
So, for all you wanting to read larger print
than your cell phone can provide, here is
your Savory Grape newsletter. Some highlights
include the arrival of the yummy 2007
Mollydooker wines, availability of Savory
Grape Gift Cards online and the announcement
of The Savory Grape Fall Charity Wine
Festival. Enjoy!

This Week's Savory Selections |
 |
2005 Carm, Duoro, Portugal. With a
Robert
Parker rating of 88 points, which means an above
average to very good mark, this red blend from
Portugal is well balanced, flavorful and
charming. A
blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and
Touriga Franca, the grapes are sourced from
Portugal's Duoro region, an area that is
becoming
known for great quality wines. The wine's
deep red
color gives way
to an expression of blackberry, mulberry and
black
cherry aromas. The aromas set you up for
seductive
flavors of black figs and liquorice. On the
palate the
wine rounds off with hints of toasted oak,
warm spicy
fruit and a silky texture. We loved this wine
and it is a
fantastic one to
welcome the cooler summer nights and Labor Day
barbecues. ($16.99)
2006 Legado Muñoz Garnacha, Spain. The
Munoz family owns about 160 acres of carefully
selected
vineyards that produce concentrated and
structured
wines. Yields are kept low, significantly
lower than
what is usual in the region. This attention
to detail has
created a medium bodied red, made from 100%
Grenache. The bouquet is that of strawberries
and
blueberries with hints of
nutmeg, pepper and some coffee. In the mouth
the selection is smooth and fruity with
smooth tannins
and
exotic spices. Having spent three months in
American
oak casks, it offers a touch of vanilla on
the finish. This
selection is a great alternative to Pinot
Noir and is
great with mushroom risotto. ($10.99)
2003 Darting Dürkhiemer Fronhof Riesling
Kabinett Trocken, Pflaz, Germany. That
is a long
name that is bound to scare anyone away. However
the smoothness of its flavors and dryness
will have
you coming back instead of running. Darting
wines
are known for their extraordinary value and for
being
superbly made. Depending on the vintage, the
wines
are both spicy-
gingery and firmly bracing, or
flowery-polleny with a
candied spice and malt. From
the Pfalz region of Germany, this is one
tasty little
Trocken selection, a term that means dry in
German.
This Riesling has wonderful aromas of apple and
ginger. The palate is juicy and smooth with
great
minerality and a winning dry finish. ($13.99)
2005 Brillando Toscana Rosso, Italy.
Brillando has taken the Italian wine scene by
storm.
The first release was one of the best valued
wines to
receive the prestigious 2 Glasses rating from
Gambero Rosso. You can enjoy Brillando young
and
fresh, but it has the structure to develop
for a decade.
The wine is concentrated with fragrances of dark
berries
and spices. The fruit and oak elements are well-
balanced and the finish is satisfying. This
special
blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot is
extremely food friendly. It's great paired
with veal
marsala or a homemade thin crusted Italian
pizza, yet
not intimidating next to
red meats, such as roasts or grilled veal.
ENJOY!
($16.99)

Weekend Wine Tastings |
 |
Friday, August 22nd (5 to 8 PM)
New selections to the Store
-
2003 Meinert Devon Crest, Devon Valley,
South
Africa.
Four vineyards make up this wine, each of which
imparts unique and complementary
characteristics.
The fruit sourced from the four vineyards are
a blend
of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The result
is a
vibrant, deep red colored wine. Classically
elegant yet
complex, this Cabernet- Merlot blend
shows ripe berry and red cherry flavors
mingled with
spicy mint tones. Smooth and velvety
already in youth, the 2003 Devon Crest will
benefit
from aging up to 2015. ($19.99, Reg:
$27.49)
