Greetings!
The constant introduction of new wineries, varietals and unique blends can be a bit daunting, we know. Keeping up with new wines is difficult, leading to many of us getting stuck in a wine rut. That's why we wanted to propose something new and fun for you. Each month beginning now, we will feature two pre-selected cases of wine at different pricepoints - under $120 and $200 - featuring unique red and whites from around the world. The cases are designed to expose you to some of the new great wines we taste each week. We will make the cases up ahead a time for easy on-the-run pick up or delivery. So, like you did with the wines we featured in the Wall Street Journal, leave your next case up to us and see what we have to offer. Click here for the two lists of wines on which you will receive a 10% discount. To get a case stop in, call (886-9463) or email us, orders@thesavorygrape.com.
Also, paired with cheeses donated by Whole Foods Market and chocolates from Chocolate Delicacy, this weekend's tastings are exciting. Since our wine ratings article a few weeks ago received such great reviews, on Friday, we will taste new Aussie selections that have 90+ point ratings and let you be the judge. Saturday, we will do a comparison tasting of Cabernet blends, including the 1999 Robert Sinskey Vineyard Reserve that we had in Napa.
Stay tuned - next week, we will taste mid-high end Napa Valley Cabs and in a few weeks will compare Amarones. You won't want to be anywhere else on these days!

TSG Happenings
End of Summer Wine Tasting. Join us Monday, August 24 at 7 PM as we give our last hurrah to summer. We will taste six favorite selections that move us from summer into early fall and enjoy appetizers and cheese. Joining us is Rhode Island's Wine Wizards who has a stellar lineup of international and California vineyards in its portfolio. The tasting is $25 and will be held at Main Street Coffee (MSC), 137 Main Street, East Greenwich. Tickets can be purchased at The Savory Grape or MSC (885-8787). The Savory Grape Relocation Update. With a little duct tape and some spackle the picture here soon will be the new home of The Savory Grape. OK, well, with a lot of reconstruction and design work it will soon look like the store we want.
Many have asked about the progress of the new location. Here it is in all its newly demolished glory. We definitely have our work cut out for us, but don't worry. We'll be sure to tidy up before we bring any wine into it. Did I hear volunteers to move all the wine? |

This Week's Savory Selections
1999 Robert Sinskey RSV, California. This is one of the great places we visited in Napa, and soon we'll be bringing some of its new selections to you. Its 1999 RSV is a beast with a warm and fuzzy side. It has inviting aromas of cassis with a soft supporting note of vanilla. The flavors dance across the palate with big plum-like notes followed by a touch of cedar and a finish of bittersweet chocolate. Due to the wine's age, you'll be rewarded with a wine that has developed the subtlety and complexity to be served with a broad range of cuisine. Pairings: Lamb with Provencal herbs, thyme roasted pork loin and grilled rib-eye. ($34.99, reg. $43.99)
2007 Thorne-Clarke Terra Barossa Chardonnay, Australia. This Aussie Chardonnay delivers brilliant aromas of sweet apricot and peach. The palate is medium to full expressing predominantly peach and nectarine flavors with hints of clove and cardamom spices, due to a small amount period of aging in French oak. Full and long, the finish shows a great balance between sweet fruit (but it isn't sweet)and creaminess. A great find from Australia. Pairings: Salmon, BBQ chicken, and grilled sword fish. Wine Spectator 91 pts. ($15.99)
2006 De Lisio "Quarterback," McLaren Vale, Australia. There are few Australian wines that can boast 4 varieties deliberately blended together to achieve a wine that tastes so complete. This blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon has good palate weight and structure without any hints of aggressive young tannins, which are balanced out by the Grenache and Merlot. This wine is formulated to allow for early drinking however the addition of Shiraz and Cabernet gives the wine focus, length and ageability. Aptly named Quarterback, this is blending at its best. Wine Advocate 90 pts. ($23.99)
2007 Primor, Chile. Primor is a classic blend of Bordeaux varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Let us say for the price this wine is GREAT! It sucks you in with aromas of cherry and ripe plum followed by enticing herbal nuances. Upon hitting the palate, the wine's smooth tannins wash rich, red fruit flavors across the palate which are bound to leave you impatiently waiting for another sip. Primor shocked us and is sure to shock you as well, especially for the price. Pairings: Roasted chicken, pork tenderloin on the grill, as well as tacos. ($10.99) |

Friday, August 7, 5 to 8 PM - 90-Point Aussie Knock Outs!
2007 Thorne-Clarke Terra Barossa Chardonnay, Australia. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. Wine Spectator 91 pts. ($15.99)
2006 Simon Hackett Old Vine Grenache, Australia. It's back!! Full of jammy black and reds berries, this spicy red comes largely from a vineyard near the hamlet of McLaren Flat, where Grenache vines were first planted in the 1950s. Floral hints add complexity and roundness to the nose, while whiffs of plump sweet berry and cherry break through. Soft, juicy red and black berry flavors with sweet vanilla and oak spice swim across the palate making the wine terrific now. With its rich, low acid frame, the wine can be cellared, too. Pairings: Grilled burgers and lamb lollipops. Wine Enthusiast 90 pts. ($15.99)

Saturday, August 8, 3 to 7 PM - A Comparison of Cabernet Blends
2008 Pares Balta Ros de Pacs, Spain. This Merlot and Cabernet blend has inviting aromas of raspberry and cherry that fill the nose, preparing you for a light and fresh palate. The wine has an interesting balance between acidity and cherry fruitiness, but it always leaves you wanting more, especially on a warm summer day. ($10.99)
2007 Primor, Chile. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($10.99)
1999 Robert Sinskey RSV, California. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($34.99, reg. $43.99)
