Greetings!
Three long days of July 4th picnics
and barbecues have now come to an end, and it's now
time to return to a normal life. Although
the weather was not the greatest, we hope you still
managed to have a great holiday weekend. Thank you
to those
who made it to the store on Saturday to taste a
few of our new Spanish selections. And we are
equally excited about this week's new Italian and
French selections and our weekend wine tasting
selections. So please stop in and enjoy.
Cheers! Jessica and Nino Granatiero

This Week's Savory Selections - New French and Italian Wines |
 |
2004 La Macolina Museum, Emilia-Romagna.
La Macolina is an historic vineyard area in the
Bologna Hills. Documents indicate that "Agricola
Maccalina," meaning "little woodland farm," was
registered by the noble Monsignani family in 1871.
Testimony adds that coaches used to stop at La
Macolina to purchase wine before their arduous climb
through the Apennines to Tuscany, only 30 miles
away. Museum was made to be the crowning
result of decade old plantings of Sangiovese,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Macolina
estate's vineyard area. It is a dry, full-bodied
red, aged for 2 years in oak barrels. If the estate were
located 20 miles south of
where it is, we would call this wine a Super Tuscan.
Museum
is one of the richest red wines of Emilia-Romagna. It
will age carefully for a decade or more. This wine
pairs exceptionally well with
duck, highly seasoned poultry and of course
Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. ($36.99)
2006 Tasca d'Almerita Regaleali Bianco,
Sicily. Tasca d'Almerita has been the benchmark
for Sicilian wines. Leaving the bustle of the coastal
capital Palermo and traveling inland through one of
Italy's most dramatic landscapes, one will discover
Regaleali, the estate of the Tasca d'Almerita family.
Located in the mountainous heart of Sicily, Regaleali
is a world unto itself: a vast estate owned by the Tasca
d'Almerita family since 1837 and best known for its
fine wines and internationally recognized cooking
school. Its Bianco, a blend of the Sicilian grapes
Inzolia, Grecanico and Catarrato, has a wonderful
bouquet of delicate apple, peach and grapefruit
aromas. In the mouth the wine is pleasantly
velvety, rich, intense and crisp. This
Sicilian white is a wonderful wine to help
you cool down on these hot summer evenings.
($14.99)
2006 Allegrini Soave, Italy.
Allegrini is a famous name in Italy. The producer for
years has brought US wine lovers fantastic selections.
According to Gambero Rosso, Italy's most important
wine publication, Allegrini is a "Star" winery, a winery
that has won at least ten "3-glass" awards. This rare
honor is given to a select few of Italy's top producers
and recognizes them for consistently producing
outstanding wines across many vintages. This
white selection is a perfect summer wine. Bright straw
yellow in color, it is made from 80% Garganega - an
indigenous grape - and 20% Chardonnay. It offers a
fresh bouquet of herbs and flowers
on the nose, while the palate offers crisp, citrus flavors
which linger on the
palate, and is framed by great acidity and
minerality. We recommended this with grilled
white fish dishes, risotto and grilled chicken kebobs.
($15.49)
2007 Saint-Peyre Picpoul-de-Pinet, France.
Southern France, particularly the Languedoc, is
commonly known for its value red wines. However
there is a white exception to this - the Picpoul de Pinet.
Made from 100% Picpoul, the grape, this wine comes
from Pinet, a small village near the Bassin de Thau, a
lagoon famed for its oysters. We love its
pleasant aromas of citrus, exotic and tropical fruit that
fill the nose. In
the mouth the wine is generous and always fresh with
a nicely integrated acidity and
very clean, lengthy finish. This is one of the perfect
partners
for oysters, sauteed scallops and grilled
fish. ($12.99)

2007 Saint-Peyre Picpoul-de-Pinet,
France.

Selections. ($12.99)
- 2004 Domaine de la Fruitière
Muscadet "Petit M," France. One of the
best things about living in Rhode Island
would have to be the abundance of fresh
shellfish. And Muscadet happens to
be the ever-so-perfect wine selection for
shellfish. The palate of the wine is lively
with acidity and minerality followed by a
crisp apple and peach fruit and creamy,
smooth, dry finish. Try this wine with
oysters, steamers, quahogs and little necks.

A Closer Look into Italy's Allegrini
-
2006 Allegrini Soave, Italy.
Please see tasting notes above in this week's
Savory
Selections. ($15.49)
- 2004 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre,
Verona, Italy.
Dense and deep ruby red in color, Palazzo
della Torre is one of Allegrini's signature wines. Full-
bodied
and rich, this blend of Corvina, Rondinella and
Sangiovese is smooth and loaded with luscious
flavors of
currant, blackberry and licorice. This wine is a classic
accompaniment
to grilled or roasted meats and barbecued
ribs. Palazzo della Torre was selected by
Wine Spectator as one of the "Top 100 wines
of the World" for five years in a row, from
2000 to 2005. ($23.99)
