The Savory Grape Wine Shop Newsletter |

Greetings!
Well it has been six months since the birth
of our daughter Sienna, and I swear she
already knows the difference between a
Cabernet and Chardonnay! Thanks to some very
helpful family members, I am back full time
at the store and have been seeing more of
you, more often. If we have not reconnected
yet, come on down so we can talk about wine!
Something else that's back are the dog days
of summer, and it's hard to believe that the
fourth of July is already
here. As you plan your holiday barbecue
don't forget to
get the right wines for the party.
In this week's
Savory Selections you will find
wine recommendations to accompany the many
dishes
you will be preparing.
And although you may get your
shopping done
ahead of time, the chance of running out of your
favorite wine can still happen. Just in case
this happens to you, we will be
open on the Fourth from 10 AM to 4 PM. So if you
run out or forgot
to pick up wine or beer, stop in or call
ahead and we will get your order ready.
Cheers! Jessica and Nino Granatiero

This Week's Savory Selections - A Spanish Twist |
 |
2006 Cueto, Rioja, Spain. This was a
selection that received rave reviews at a recent
Spanish wine tasting. The grapes used to
the make the Cueto Rioja come from a
landmark mountain in Rioja, which is one of the
highest altitude areas in all of Rioja. The
mountain is
also the inspiration for the labels of the
Cueto wines.
Cueto is a
medium-bodied red made from a blend of
Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Garnacha. The wine
opens
with a fine bouquet of fresh berry fruit and
well
integrated oak. In the mouth it is
exceptionally smooth
and
balanced with silky, dark cherry flavors.
Just delightful!
($10.99)
2007 Alma Godello, Monterrei, Spain.
Godello
(pronounced go-day-o) is in a perfect
position for a
breakthrough as other interesting, unknown
whites
such as Gruner Veltliner, Sylvaner and
Albarino have
done. Initially
ignored by the wine press but now represented by
various importers, Godello has been embraced by
those in wine world and soon should be
recognized
as the outstanding wine that it is. This
aromatic
and crisp white is from Galicia in Northwest
Spain.
Godello is the grape variety and it produces
this
gorgeous wine with notes of peach, apricot,
lemon
and grapefruit, all expressed with a
remarkably fresh
and lively acidity. The floral notes are
beautifully
integrated into this lovely medium bodied wine!
($14.99)
2007 Las Rocas Rosado, Spain. If you like
the Las Rocas Garnacha then we guarantee you
will
love its Rosé made from 100% Garnacha
(Grenache).
Stainless steel fermented, the Las Rocas
Rosado is
a great wine to
enjoy this Fourth of July. Opening with
inviting aromas
of strawberries and raspberries, the wine
leads to a
juicy palate that follows the nose. Overall,
this Rosé is
dry and balanced and leaves the mouth with a
clean,
medium length finish. ($11.99)
2005 Havens Albariño, Napa Valley,
California.
Albariño, a varietal native to Spain and
Portugal,
is relatively new to the United States and
New World
wine in general. Havens discovered the
grape in 1996 while a on a trip to Spain,
and by 1997 had planted the varietal in the
cool area of Napa Carneros. In 1999, Havens
became
the first New World producers of Albariño.
The 2005
vintage has pleasant floral scents of lime
blossom,
early pear and lychee fruit. The aromas
carry over in
the mouth accompanied by a high natural
acidity that
accentuates the intense minerality typical of
the
varietal. This wine pairs exceptionally well
with
seafood, but also anything rich or spicy from
foie gras
to jambalaya. ($27.99)
