  • Greetings!

One of the things we love most about having our wine shop is working with and meeting some really interesting people from around the world - wine makers, vineyard owners, importers. (Of course sampling wine on a regular basis isn't that bad either!) Having the opportunity to welcome Sergio Mionetto from Italy to our shop this Wednesday, June 18th is just another reason why we love what we do. Please join us from 5-8 PM at the shop to meet Sergio, the grandson of Francesco Mionetto who began the winery in 1887, and taste a variety of wines from his estate that are renowned worldwide. We also will have a representative from Whole Foods Market in Cranston present to provide cheese samples for the wonderful wines of Mionetto.

And as we mentioned in last week's newsletter, The Savory Grape is going green. In an effort to help preserve the planet, in a couple of months we will be switching to reusable wine totes, replacing the 4-bottle and 6-bottle cardboard carriers. Just like at some grocery stores, you will have the opportunity to purchase these new totes for $1.99 and receive $0.25 every time you use it for the purchase of at least two bottles of wine. In just eight visits, your initial purchase will be covered, and the Johnston Landfill will have that much less waste. (Of course, we will always have other forms of free packaging.)

    Cheers! Jessica and Nino Granatiero

    A Glimpse into Mionetto

A well known producer of Prosecco, Mionetto is located in the Veneto region of Italy, which is undoubtedly famous for the Prosecco grape and the ancient city of Venice. The Prosecco zone is comprised of an area between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.

In the sunny hillsides just north of Venice lies Valdobbiadene: a generous land of ancient traditions where time seems to stand still and life proceeds at a peaceful rhythm. Valdobbiadene is a place where wine cellars, vineyards, taverns, ancient villas, churches and piazzas are authentic, romantic and marked by a tradition of gracious hospitality and fine cuisine.

The Mionetto family has been producing Prosecco in the very heart of Valdobbiadene since 1887. The family's great passion, dedication and skill have made Mionetto one of the most appreciated wines in the world, placing it at the top of special request lists in chic locations from New York to London to Tokyo.

Sergio Mionetto, the master vintner and esteemed wine connoisseur, personally oversees every step of the processing, from grape-picking to bottling, thus ensuring the quality standards that have earned international recognition, awards and accolades. Join us in meeting Sergio from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, June 18th at The Savory Grape.

    This Week's Savory Selections
    LMR

2005 Long Meadow Ranch House Red, California. LMR Ranch House Red is an "E-Z" drinking wine perfect for a gathering of family and friends. The label features one of the first Appaloosa horses on the ranch, "E-Z." The Hall Family (owners of LMR) felt E-Zs relaxed, good-natured temperament perfectly captured the spirit of this "easy" drinking red wine. Ranch House Red is a proprietary blend of estate- grown grapes from LMR. The Halls have carefully selected lots of grapes that can provide wines with immediate drinking pleasure. Remarkably deep and dark garnet in color, all the best LMR flavors are present in this wine - vibrant black currant fruit, earthiness and incredible spice notes. This wine is perfectly balanced and ready for the table. Its tannins are ample, but soft. A pleasant backbone of acidity results in a mouthwatering, lingering finish. Fantastic! ($16.49)

2004 Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia. Divine is one word to describe this brooding full bodied selection. Rated 91 points by Robert Parker, this is one to grab quickly. Its color is bright crimson with hints of dark purple due to its oak maturation and specific handling techniques. The fragrant aroma of this wine consists of ripe and rich black berry fruits with complex spice. Secondary aromas of blackberry and cassis are followed by flavors of young ripe red fruits with elegant complex oak notes, so typical of the Penley Style. Balance is a key feature in all Penley wines. ($16.99, reg. $21.99)

2007 Lurton Pinot Gris, Argentina. Jacques and Francois Lurton have always been particularly interested in Argentina and its potential for producing great wines. Since 1992, the Lurton brothers have been producing and marketing the quality of Argentine wines which is now recognized by everyone. Grown on high-altitude slopes of Mendoza (around 1,100 meters), the wine has a tantalizing citrus-like bouquet of peaches, apples and ripe apricots. Rounded and complex, the wine is very clean and fresh on the palate. With a delightful aftertaste and well-proportioned fruit and acidity, the wine delivers a good all-around richness. It is perfect with softer cheeses, shellfish, seafood salads and cold, light pasta dishes. ($9.99)

2005 Chateau Magence Graves, France. This white Bordeaux, a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Semillion, opens with inviting aromas of peach and citrus fruit, complimented by slight mineral notes. On the palate the wine has a delicate initial taste, then lively with a round smoothness and long, straight finish. Overall the wine has a well-balanced structure and is one of the nicest Bordeaux we have tasted at this price in some time. ($10.99)

    Weekend Wine Tastings

Friday, June 20th (5 to 8 PM) Great Selections Under $11

    • 2006 Delas Saint-Esprit Cotes du Rhone, France. Not a new wine to the store, but a new vintage. And we are very impressed. This vintage is comprised of only Syrah and Grenache. The wine has wonderful dusty aromas of earth and red fruit. In the mouth, loads of berry flavors come through leading to a slight spice on the finish. A very complex wine for the price, the Saint-Esprit Cotes du Rhone is one to look for on the under $11 table. ($10.99)
    • 2005 Chateau Magence Graves, France. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($10.99)
