Whether the date marks a significant anniversary or the birth of a child, Vintage Port is the cream of the crop and a great gift. Treat Dad to one of these selections - Ramos Pinto 1982 Port ($123.99), Taylor Fladgate 2003 Port ($108.99) or Fonseca 2000 Port ($107.99).
Wine Club: Whether Dad is an avid wine drinker or new to the game, The Savory Sipper Wine Clubs are great gifts. Prices range from $29-$159 per month, and you can still sign up to have him begin for June.
Signed Bottles: We still have a few bottles left of the 2005 Anderson's Conn Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($67.99, 96 points, Robert Parker), signed by owner Todd Anderson, and the 2004 Merriam Vineyards Block 21 Cabernet Sauvignon ($39.99) and 2002 Merriam Russian River Valley Merlot ($31.99), signed by owner Peter Merriam.
Scotch instead of wine: Surprise Dad with a great bottle of single malt Scotch whiskey, The Bruichladdich Rocks. "Rocks" was created from a range of contrasting cask types and ages to provide wave after wave of compelling citrus and subtle red berry fruit flavors ($49.99).
Books: If Dad is an Italian wine lover then we have two great books for you. Joe Bastianich's Vino Italiano ($27.99) and Vino Italiano Buying Guide ($14.95) will answer any question about Italian wine you may have ever had and also guide you in finding some of the greatest Italian wines that are and have been produced. |

This Week's Savory Selections
2007 Turnbull Old Bull, Napa Valley, CA. Legend has it that the Turnbull name can be traced back to the early 1300s when a brave man saved a king's life by turning a bull who threatened to charge at the king. Grateful, the king dubbed the brave man "Turnbull" and gave him a crest with the motto "Audaci Favet Fortuna" or "Fortune Favors the Bold." Centuries later Turnbull winery, founded by William Turnbull, in Napa Valley creates delectable wines worthy of the legend.
Its Old Bull is a blend of Merlot, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Barbera, and Syrah - a fantastic, rich, lush California blend. The wine fermented in both stainless steel prior to blending to accentuate the pure flavors of each varietal and then aged in French oak for 16 months following blending to produce concentrated flavors. The result is a wonderfully lush and complex creation full of rich berry flavors. Decadent, this one is sure to become a favorite. ($24.99)
2007 Castell Silvaner Trocken, Germany. Listed as one of the Top Value Wines of the Year and 90 Points by Wine & Spirits, this is a great summer wine, if we ever get a summer! It is from Germany but is by no means sweet. This is dry or "trocken"as they say in Germany. And Silvaner is the grape that produces a wine with charming fruitiness (citrus and lemon/lime), lively balanced acidity and mineralic taste. Fresh, this is a harmonious wine that's slightly exotic on the palate. Foods: This is a great match for raw mussels, clams and oysters. ($15.99)
2003 X Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, California. The 2003 X Winery Napa Valley Cabernet is sourced from three different vineyards sites and is made from 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Malbec. An inky dark red/blue color gives way to pleasantly aged aromas of dusty cocoa, leather, blackberry and dark red cherry. Similar flavors flood the palate with the addition of bayleaf, mint and well-integrated coffee and chocolate. This wine has a bit of age on it and is drinking beautifully right now. However the wine will hold for another 2-4 years. ($17.99, reg. $23.99)
2006 X Winery "Truchard Vineyard" Los Carneros Pinot Noir, California. Sourced from five distinct blocks (Swan, Pommard, Bowl, Dijon, and Martini) located on the Truchard property, the wine from each block is vinified in a unique manner and then blended 3 months prior to bottling. Beautiful aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cherry with some chocolate excite the nose and are noted too on the palate. This versatile wine will go well with cumin-spiced grilled pork as well as grilled Ahi Tuna or cajus-spiced Salmon. Wine Enthusiast 93 pts. ($17.99, reg. $22.99)

Weekend Wine Tastings
Friday, June 19th, 5 to 8 PM - New Selections For the Grill
2007 Barnwood Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Barbara, CA. The new vintage of Barnwood's Cabernet Sauvignon originated in the Santa Barbara Highlands. The vineyard is located 3,000 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest elevation vineyards in the United States. This wine has a rich deep ruby glow with blackberry and spice nuances on the nose while the palate experiences black cherry, cocoa and vanilla from the soft hints of French oak aging. This will rival many Napa Cabernets. One of our picks! ($17.99)
True Earth Red Blend, Mendocino, CA. Created by three men who call themselves the "Three Thieves," True Earth Red is a certified organic red wine containing Cabernet, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. A blend of traditional style and modern techniques, True Earth is a wine made for the everyday wine drinker enjoying the simple pleasures in life. Medium bodied, this smooth wine is full of dark berry and coffee flavors accented by mocha and a touch of spice. Can you imagine with BBQ spare ribs or Gorgonzola burgers? ($15.99)
2007 Castell Silvaner Trocken, Germany. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($15.99)
Saturday, June 20th, 3 to 7 PM - Just in Summer Releases
2006 Domaine de la Solitude Cotes du Rhone, France. This Cotes du Rhone has long been a favorite of ours for taste as well as price. The 2006 vintage is no exception, with aromas of wild blackberries, cedar and hints of Asian spice. This light-to-medium bodied wine shows an inviting palate of intense berries and roasted peppers breaking through to a faint spice and roasted coffee beans on the finish. ($10.99)
2007 Domaine du Salvard Cheverny, France. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Cheverny region of the Loire Valley is the perfect summer sipper. The wine is high in acid (in a good way), dry and shows wonderful citrus aromatic. It is perfectly balanced with a decadent lemon core of fruit wrapped in bright, crisp freshness. Shuck some oysters and away you go. ($16.99)
2007 Kuentz-Bas Pinot Blanc Alsace, France. This is a true Alsatian Pinot Blanc - dry, light in body but rich in flavors of peaches and apricots. It has a balanced acidity that is mouth watering that makes it a perfect white worth drinking alone or with seafood and summer salads. ($15.99) | |
