Greetings!

Art and wine offer a great combination. I actully feel that we are quite lucky because so many Savory Grape clients are artists - Photographers Sandra Basile, Ruth Clegg, David Dadekian, Scott Indermaur, Erin Manchester, Steve Mancini and Painter Morgan Hall who is showcasing now with us.

Just recently Nino and I attended an opening that celebrated Photographer and EG Resident Scott Indermaur's Revealed and WRNI's This I Believe Revealedprojects. (WRNI is RI's NPR.) Developed by Indermaur, Revealed is a photoessay collection that depicts people's connections with their sense of self and expression of spirituality from a nonliteral perspective. This I Believe is a project modeled on Edward R. Murrow's popular 1950's radio series of the same name. Winner of a 2008 Best of Rhode Island, This I Believe gives participants the opportunity to share stories and experiences that helped mold their values that are then aired on WRNI.

These two projects came together to create a new project and have an even greater impact on Rhode Islanders through print, radio and photography. We think the project is very unique and thought provoking. We hope you sit back with a nice glass of wine and check it out. You could even become a subject if you wanted.

Don't Forget Father's Day!

If you are still struggling to figure out what to get your father, grandfather or husband this Father's Day, quit stressing and let us do the work for you. Rather than getting him more golf balls and tees or a new power tool, we have plenty of great ideas that would "WOW" the cool male in your life. See below some of the many gifts we can suggest.
  • Wine Club: Whether the man in your life is an avid wine drinker or new to the game, The Savory Sipper Wine Club is a great gift. Prices range from $29-$159 per month and you can still sign up to have him start in June.

  • Signed Bottles: We still have a few bottles left of the 2005 Anderson's Conn ValleyConn Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($67.99, 96 points, Robert Parker), signed by owner Todd Anderson, and the 2004 Merriam Vineyards Block 21 Cabernet Sauvignon ($39.99) and 2002 Merriam Russian River Valley Merlot ($31.99), signed by owner Peter Merriam.

  • Scotch instead of wine: Surprise Dad with a great bottle of single malt Scotch whiskey, The Bruichladdich Rocks. "Rocks" was created from a range of contrasting cask types and ages to provide wave after wave of compelling citrus and subtle red berry fruit flavors. ($49.99)

  • Books: If the man in your life is a real Italian wine fan then we have two great books for you. Joe Bastianich's Vino Italiano ($27.99) and Vino Italiano Buying Guide ($14.95) will answer any question about Italian wine you may have ever had and also guide you along as you find some of the greatest Italian wines that are and have been produced.

This Week's Savory Selections
This week's Savory Selections are limited wines that are excellent and that we order earlier in the year, every year, in order to get our delivery and allocation later, which thankfully have just arrived. To kick them off, these are 10% off this week.

Domaine les pallieres2006 Domaine Les Pallières Gigondas, France. With the ability to source fruit from 60-100 year-old vines, Domaine Les Pallières Gigondas is one of the finest in the region. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Clairette and Mourvèdre creates seductive aromas of red berries, roses and incense. In the mouth, the wine has a lush mouthfeel that is coupled by dark raspberry flavors with pleasant mineral tones. It you want a new red to try that will pair wonderfully with summer meats this is the one. It will also age nicely for another 8-10 years. ($34.99)

2007 Kuentz-Bas Pinot Blanc Alsace, France.
This is a true Alsatian Pinot Blanc - dry, light in body but rich in flavors of peaches and white flowers. It has a balanced acidity and minerality that is mouth watering. We've been waiting for this. It is a perfect white worth drinking alone or with grilled seafood, shellfish and salads. ($15.99)

Saint Cosme CDR2008 Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone, France. Opposed to the traditional blends of Cotes du Rhone, the Saint Cosme is 100% Syrah. The wine shows excellent notes of blackberries and charcoal, balanced a good acidity and smooth mouthfeel. Medium-to-full in body, Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone has opulent flavors, beautiful freshness and length. This wine is meant to be drunk young so enjoy now or over the next 2-3 years. ($14.99)

2007 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre, France.
This is classic Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Reverdy Sancerre has a bouquet of peach, fig, herbs and mint that leads to pear and citrus flavors on the palate. Elegant with well-balanced acidity - a superb dry Loire Valley white - it is ideal for pairing with aged cheeses and fresh seafood, especially oysters. ($28.99)

 Weekend Wine Tastings

Friday, June 12th, 5 to 8 PM - Wines of Angelini

angelini sangiovese2006 Angelini Colli Pesaresi, Italy. This 100% Estate Sangiovese is a true classic Italian red - rustic, hearty, earthy with great fruit notes. WE LOVE IT! Made in Colli Pesaresi, a wine appellation in the northern part of the Marche region near the city of Pesaro, it has a spicy bouquet with accents of cherries and a hint of cedar. Well balanced, it has a nice acidity with a  palate that shows lingering stewed fruit flavors. This is great with pasta with tomato and meat sauce, roasted meets and hard cheeses - Pecorino Romano would be great. ($15.99)

2007 Angelini Pinot Noir, Italy.
People often complain that it is hard to find a good Italian Pinot Noir that is balanced and high in acid. We have to agree to some point. But this one is a good representation and is a good price. Medium-bodied, it is velvety soft. Opening with an inviting bouquet of red berries with a hint of candied apples and plums, it is still dry, yet very soft. On the palate, it has flavors reminiscent of candied apple, plum and spice that finishes with a bright, cranberry-like acidity. We recommend with grilled pork chops, grilled fish and lighter pastas. ($10.99)

 Saturday, June 13th, 3 to 7 PM -  Chile's Great Finds

2003 Puerto Infinito Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile. Recently, this wine was used as the dinner red wine for the American Heart Association's Annual Heart Ball fundraising event that we attended. We received so many great comments about it that we wanted you to try it too. This Cabernet couples full body with delicate tannins, and it presents a bouquet of red fruits, berries and black pepper. Subtle and complex fruit notes envelope the palate producing a prolonged and elegant persistence. It is a great match with grilled red meats, Filet Mignon or pasta Bolognese. ($11.99)

La Fortuna logo2008 La Fortuna Sauvignon Blanc, Chile.  This organic South American light white is crisp and mouthwatering with tropical and citrus fruit flavors and aromas and a clean well-balanced finish. Perfect as an aperitif or with grilled fish such as Mahi Mahi or Sea Bass. This is one of our new everyday whites for the summer. ($10.49)
