    This Week's Savory Selections

2004 Nieto Senetiner Cabernet/Shiraz Reserva, Argentina. Bodegas Nieto Senetiner was established in 1888 in the province of Mendoza, Argentina. This traditional winery, dedicated to the elaboration of high-end premium wines, is considered one of the top wineries in the country. Its blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz is aged for one year in French oak, producing a deeply-colored red with a nice concentration of berry fruit. Wild fruits and pepper flavors, with a touch of vanilla are found on the nose and palate. Overall the wine has excellent balance between the fruit and the oak, but finishes with soft, yet persistent tannins. ($12.99)

2005 Hundred Tree Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia. Hundred Tree Hill wines are grown in the Pyrenees and made at Redbank Winery in Victoria, Australia. Hand crafted from estate grown fruit, the Hundred Tree Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc. Made in a light, brisk and elegant style, the way Bordeaux used to taste, the wine has rich aromas of sweet black currant mingled with hints of eucalyptus, herbs and nutty oak. Full bodied and silky, this selection will be drink well for the next 5-7 years. ($21.99)

2004 Cooper Mountain Meadowlark Pinot Noir, Oregon. If you have been reading the newsletters during the past couple of weeks, you will have noticed our highlights of the Cooper Mountain Vineyard. Well just last week we were able to order a couple of cases of its 2004 Meadowlark Pinot Noir which has been sold out at the vineyard. (The wine will be arriving tomorrow.) This single vineyard Pinot Noir is organically grown and has rich floral aromas and concentrated, deep black berry flavors, such as black cherry, plum and black berries that mingle nicely with soft earthy notes. These are all the characteristics that make this Oregon Pinot ever so popular. (Regular $31.99; Special Offering: $24.99)

    Weekend Wine Tastings

Friday, May 30th (5 to 8 PM) Matua Valley Wines.
Matua Valley Wines began as a small family-run winery in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1973. In a short time, winemakers Ross and Bill Spence quickly gained a reputation for innovative, award-winning New Zealand wines - including the first New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

    • 2007 Matua Sauvignon Blanc. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is best served when vibrant, up to two years from production. This selection is light green in color, with passion and citrus fruit aromas filling the nose complimented by complexing flint. The palate is filled with passion fruit, melon and lemon fruit, all kept in check by the distinctive and chalky Marlborough acidity. Try this flavorful Sauvignon Blanc with Snapper fillets served with fresh dill sauce. ($13.99)
    • 2006 Matua Pinot Noir. This Pinot Noir was created from fruit sourced from top vineyards around Marlborough. It has undergone a secondary, nonalcoholic fermentation known as malolactic fermentation in a mix of seasoned French (20%) and American (5%) oak along with stainless steel tanks. (Malolactic fermentation changes harsh malic acid into softer lactic acid thus creating a softer wine.) The result is a wine that exhibits perfumed violet aromas that are complemented by sweet cherry fruit. The palate displays soft, rich red berry fruit that is balanced with nicely integrated, lingering oak, resulting in a palate of length and complexity. Try this Pinot Noir with Thai style lamb and peanuts with a lime dressing. ($13.99)

Saturday, May 31st (3 to 7 PM) Tasting from the Under $11 Table.

    • 2007 Artazuri Navarra, Spain. The Navarra wine region of Spain is located in the northern portion of the country and is affected by the Mediterranean, Atlantic Ocean and Pyrenees Mountains, helping to make elegant wine. The primary varietal grown in this region is Garnacha (Grenache), but Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon are also popular grapes, with the latter used primarily for blending. This Rose is the most popular wine produced by the Artazuri Vineyard, made from the Garnacha grape. It is a dry wine with rich, red berry (cherry and raspberry) flavors with no tannins. This is a great sipping wine, especially in the warm weather that is now upon us. ($10.99)
    • 2007 Cono Sur Carmenere, Chile. The 2007 Carmenere has a deep, beautiful red- carmine color which is typical of the varietal it represents so well. This wine showcases a delicious, velvety quality and red fruit aromas that combine perfectly with spicy hints. In the mouth this Carmenere is very intense, tasty, juicy and elegant. It is a wine with excellent structure and balanced acidity. Meant to be drunk young, we recommend enjoying over the next 2 to 3 years and with bold, barbecued meats. ($9.99)
