Greetings!
Just this past weekend, the wine industry
lost one of its most influential pioneers and
legends, Robert Mondavi. Throughout the
course of more than 40 years, Mondavi served
as a relentless force within the industry
and changed the presence of California wines
on an international level. The Wine
Spectator has put forth a fabulous article
that highlights his career and how his
efforts changed
the industry. Click here
for the article.
Remember this weekend is a holiday weekend,
so if you need help selecting wines for your
backyard parties or are simply in a hurry,
can't get to the shop and need a delivery, we
are here to help.
However if you have friends in town and are
looking for something to do, stop in to sample
wines on Friday evening from Oregon's
renowned Cooper Mountain Vineyard (organic
and biodynamic) or on Saturday afternoon from
New Zealand's Spy Valley whose Sauvignon
Blanc just received a 90 point rating by the
Wine Spectator. And as a reminder,
all the wines will be paired with cheese
selections from Whole
Foods.
Cheers! Jessica and Nino Granatiero

Weekend Wine Tastings |
 |
Friday, May 23rd (5 to 8 PM)
Cooper Mountain Vineyard.
Oregon's Cooper Mountain Vineyard is not your
standard winery. It's not
even your standard Oregon winery, if there is
such a thing. Once considered a bit
eccentric, or "crazy" if you will, Cooper
Mountain today is recognized as an
innovative leader in a vineyard movement that
rapidly is gaining acceptance. Organic and
biodynamic® farming have an increasingly
important role in vineyard and winery
management. The practices that once seemed to
have little benefit finally are being
understood. The vineyard rests on
the slopes of an ancient volcano. Over
thousands of years, erosion helped create the
terrain, soils and characteristics that make
its wines unique. Its vineyards sit on land
once farmed by Oregon pioneers who took to
the unique location despite its challenges
and lack of water. Cooper Mountain has a rich
heritage.
- 2006 Cooper Mountain Pinot Gris.
This pale, light gold organic Pinot
Gris has quite the
aromatic nose. Tropical fruit, passion fruit,
mango, key lime, kiwi and melon are all found
in the
bouquet. The tart entry on the palate
explodes with
grapefruit, citrus and tropical fruit with a
slightly
creamy mouth feel. And of course, beautiful
acidity on
the finish. Possibly our best Pinot Gris yet.
($17.99)
- 2006 Cooper Mountain Reserve Pinot
Noir.
Also organically made, Cooper Mountain
Reserve Pinot Noir
is a consistent wine that has lived up to
expectations each vintage. Currently the
wine distinctly shows flavors characteristic
of Cooper Mountain's two youngest vineyards:
Farmington and Johnson School. As these vines
age we look forward to how this Pinot Noir
will develop
throughout future years. This vintage has a very
clean nose of raspberry, and bright cherry.
Likewise, these flavors are evident in the
palate along with lusciously smooth tannins
and just a bit of oak on the finish. ($25.99)
Saturday, May 24th (3 to 7 PM)
New Zealand's Spy Valley Vineyard.
Spy Valley is a colloquial name for New
Zealand's Waihopai Valley and is derived from
the presence of a satellite communications
monitoring station (spy base) nearby. One of
Marlborough's finest cool climate vineyards,
Spy Valley seals all wines with screwcap
closures to preserve the integrity of the
vineyards and the winemaker's skills in
producing youthful, exuberant wines bursting
with fruit flavors and aromas.
- 2007 Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc.
Sourced from a vineyard in Marlborough,
the Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc is stainless
steel fermented. The result is a wine
bursting with flavors of passionfruit and
gooseberry and overflowing with scents of
herbs as well as a slight minerality. A
classic example of what New Zealand has to
offer, this white is crisp with just the
right amount of acidity and balanced with a
dry finish. ($18.99)
- Spy Valley Pinot Noir.
Also sourced from the Spy Valley vineyard in
Marlborough, New Zealand, the 2006 Pinot Noir
is fermented in small "open-top" vats that
are worked by hand to extract just the right
color and amount of tannins in a traditional
fashion. Aged in oak, this wine has just the
right amount of spice to its finish to
compliment the medium body style, cherry
flavors, and clean raspberry bouquet. ($30.49)
