Greetings!
New York City is a fascinating place. Even if you don't like cities, there's an undisputable energy that is emitted. We felt that last week, when we visited for a couple of days. Always looking for inspiration for new ideas and to keep things fresh, we met with fellow NYC wine shop owners. Despite being in the industry, it still amazes us the amount of different wines, especially Italian, that are produced today. We chatted with restaurateur Joe Bastianich (who we just had lunch with a few weeks prior) at Becco, one of his many NYC restaurants. The food was fantastic - Nino and Patrick were in culinary heaven when they had unlimited table service of the chef's daily pasta preparations. With our meal we enjoyed a bottle of the Bastianich Sauvignon "B" that we have at the shop. Being there reminded us just how wonderful Italian food and wine are. (Sabrina stayed back to continue her eonolgy studies and run the shop.)
We had many take aways from our trip and hope to share some of our new ideas for the shop with you soon. Until then, join us this weekend for a sampling of new delicious selections, including a single vineyard Barolo from the 2001 vintage, one of the best. |

Piemonte, Piemonte, Piemonte!
Piemonte, or Piedmont, occupies the Northwest corner of Italy. The wines of this region are among the undisputed Greats of Italy and are ones about which every wine lover should know. Barolo is the king of the region and is one wine many choose to collect, due to its great aging ability. But Piedmont has it all - fruity fresh reds such as Dolcetto, refreshing whites of Gavi, Langhe and Roero, and of course the ever-popular Barberas, Barbaresco and Barolos. The 2001 and 2004 vintages were some of the very best for reds and these are ones you should seek out. We make it easy - we have many 2004 Barolos, and are excited to share with you a single vineyard 2001 Barolo on Saturday. So stop in to taste some selections that this great region has to offer.
2001 Costa di Bussia, Campo dei Buoi, Barolo, Italy. This single-vineyard Barolo, made from the famed Nebbiolo grape, is from a vintage that received a 96-point rating. It shows lovely aromas of cherry, currant, rose petals and oak. Full-bodied with excellent concentration, the wine is round with a generous mid-palate and layers of fruit. A long finish with a lovely spiciness, polished tannins and beautifully integrated oak will leave you quite satisfied. Coming from a stunning vintage, this wine is ready to drink now - harmonious, complex and classy. ($38.99, reg. $44.99)
2007 Damilano Langhe Arneis, Italy. Arneis is another one of the many Italian grape varieties. It shows lemon, grapefruit and pear aromas on the nose; the flavors replicate that of the nose with a hint of cream. The finish has a vibrant mineral edge and food friendly acidity, making this wine great with grilled fish and various other treats from the sea. If you usually drink Santa Margherita PG try this instead. ($22.99)
2006 Peirano Estates Viognier, Lodi, California. Lodi is East of Napa and is a great warm climate area. After aging for five months in mostly used French oak, this medium-bodied Viognier has developed aromas of peaches, pineapple and tropical fruit complemented by scents of lemon and ginger. Lush flavors of fresh ripe peaches are balanced by flavors of apples, pears and orange marmalade. This wine will remind you of a spring day on a mountainside. ($13.99)
2006 Peirano Estates Red Shorts Red, Lodi California. Sometimes you just want something that's simple and easy. This selection is that - a robust blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet and Viognier, called Red Shorts Red. The blend takes on a deep burgundy color, and its aromas are of blackberries and plums, complemented by spice and toasty oak. The flavors are quite distinct of sweet black cherries, blackberries and boysenberries with a long seductive finish. There is a story behind the Red Shorts Red so make sure you come in to find out and taste. ($13.99)
