Greetings!

Mother's Day will be upon us soon, and for the past few days I have been thinking more than usual about my mom. The reason is - my mom will not be spending Mother's Day with us, my brother or my father this year. Today, my 65-year-old mom accompanied by a 85-year-old friend left for a 10-day trip to the Grand Canyon. Two retired ladies on a journey out west - an older version of Thelma and Louise!

For breakfast gatherings like Mother's Day, my mom made a brunch dish called The Egg Puff that I always loved. It's really simple and just delightful. So to celebrate her on Mother's Day this year, we have opted to stay in and prepare this delicious dish that I wanted to share with you. So if you decide to stay in and prepare this dish (recipe below), you will certainly enjoy it more when paired with our suggested wines below.

Also to celebrate Mother's Day, when you renew or purchase a one-year wine club membership, you will receive the 13th month free. Treat mom (or yourself) all year long - she (you) deserves it! (Expires May 31.)

The Egg Puff

Ingredients
10 eggs
1/2 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
4 c. grated Monterey Jack cheese
1/2 cup butter melted
1, 4-ounce can green chiles, diced
2 c. creamed cottage cheese
(Optional: half pound cooked and diced bacon or Scrapple. Scrapple is made in Delaware, and I have not yet found it to be sold in New England.)

Preparation
1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease 13x9x2 inch glass pan.
2. Beat eggs until light & frothy. Add flour, baking powder, salt, cheese, melted butter, chiles & cottage cheese. Stir until well blended.
3. Turn into prepared baking dish & bake for about 40 minutes, & until puffed up & slightly browned.
4. Cut into squares & serve hot.

Pair with: 2008 Las Perdices Sauvignon Blanc, 2008 Domaine La Manarine Côtes du Rhone Rosé or 2006 Alto las Hormigas Bonarda, if adding bacon or Scrapple. These wines are featured below.
This Week's Savory Selections

altos bonarda2006 Alto las Hormigas Colonia Las Liebres Bonarda, Argentina. Bonarda, a grape that few have experienced but many should, is originally from Italy. Today it is grown well and widely in Argentina. This full bodied, deep red is ripe and juicy with loads of plum, sweet toast, cocoa and boysenberry jam. Need we say more? Bold, beautiful and delicious, the ultra smooth mouthfeel and easy-going tannins make this an instant crowd-pleaser and great with the above recipe if you add bacon or scrapple. Sip by itself or enjoy with burgers, grilled pork chops and barbecued ribs. ($11.99)

2008 Domaine La Manarine Côtes du Rhone Rosé, France. Imported by the famed Neal Rosenthal, the 2008 vintage is made of Grenache from Domaine La Manarine, an estate that produces exquisite Côtes du Rhône Reds and Rosés. Although not sweet, the wine carries a dark rose color with notes of violets, raspberries and strawberries. The palate is dry, smooth and full of various intermingling flavors - cranberry, raspberry and spiced apple. This is truly one of our favorite Rosés under $15. ($14.49)

2008 Domaine de Fenouillet Côtes de Ventoux Rosé, France. Another French Rose! As you may know, France is THE place for quality, exquisite Rosé production. This Côtes de Ventoux Rosé from the village of Beaumes de Venise, also in the Rhone, is pale rose in color, yet quite fruity with dried cherry and strawberry flavors and a brisk mineral finish. Again, another one of our favorite Rosés, especially for the money. ($13.99)

las perdices2008 Las Perdices Sauvignon Blanc, Argentina. Las Perdices (the partridges) offers intense passion fruit, mango, and pink grapefruit aromas that flood the nose. With a good attack on the palate, this Sauvignon Blanc has a well balanced acidity and long lasting finish that accentuate the wine's tropical fruit notes. Sip this wine outside in the sun or pair with various Asian cuisine, grilled shrimp and oysters. It will delight you. ($15.49)

 Weekend Wine Tastings

Friday, May 8th, 5 to 8 PM - New Favorite Selections

layer cake primitivo
2007 Layer Cake Primitivo, Puglia, Italy. We scooped up the remaining Layer Cake Primitivo in RI and wanted to share it with you. This wine, aka Zinfandel, has a balance of elegance and power. The mouth is full of spice, white pepper, jammy black cherries, plums, blackberries and espresso. Warm and rich on the palate, it has a creamy texture that is well supported by the deep structure of the wine. This is a winner for the grill. ($15.49)

2008 Domaine La Manarine Côtes du Rhone Rosé, France. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($14.49)

Saturday, May 9th, 3 to 7 PM - New Favorite Selections Continued

arido

2007 Arido Sauvignon Blanc, Argentina. If you are looking for a new everyday Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is the one. It opens with aromas of citrus fruits and a nice grassiness typical of the varietal. Additional aromas of peach and apricot lead to a lush, well-balanced palate featuring a crisp, clean acidity. Some think this wine is like a lighter version of France's Sancerre (made from Sauvignon Blanc) with a fresh texture, round fruit and nice fruitiness. ($11.99)

2008 Domaine de Fenouillet Cotes de Ventoux Rosé, France. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($13.99)

2006 ALH Colonia Las Liebres Bonarda, Argentina.
Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($11.99)
