  • Greetings!

With all the beautiful weather we have had lately, the rain was destined to come. Although the weather wasn't the best last night, it wasn't bad enough to stop many from joining us at Main St. Coffee (MSC), where we tasted great wines from Chateau Ste Michelle in Washington State. We will continue to hold tastings once a month at MSC through June, focusing on a different region or vineyard. The next MSC tasting will be held on Monday, May 19th.

Earlier this year, Ridge Vineyards allocated Rhode Island a small sampling of its new releases. We responded quickly and were lucky to receive a small allocation of these limited wines. Come join us this Friday as we taste a few of the wines from Ridge Vineyards. We will taste Ridge's Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, Paso Robles Zinfandel and the Lytton West Syrah. This is a tasting you will not want to miss! ( A 10% discount will be offered on these wines on Friday.)

Lastly, we are pleased to announce that we have developed a partnership with Whole Foods Market in Cranston. During our weekend wine tastings at the shop, our featured wines will be paired with a sampling of cheeses from Whole Foods Market. So please stop in to enjoy a fine selection of wines and cheeses.

    Cheers! Jessica and Nino Granatiero

    Global Warming

Just imagine gathering with friends and family to celebrate the big news. Empty wine glasses sparkle as if anticipating the contents to come as you remove the cork from the special bottle of Champagne that you've been saving. As you fill the glasses, you take note of the appearance of this spectacular wine - the deep ruby red color and almost inky opaque denseness. Red wine with no bubbles called Champagne? Is this a bad dream? Click here for the full article.

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Huntington

2005 Huntington Petite Sirah, California. The 2005 Petite Sirah, a blend of 88% Petite Sirah and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, has been aged in both new and old French oak for about 10 months. With the scent of fresh blueberries, black fruit, chocolate, blackberry and black cherry, the palate is equally as rich, full and juicy in dark fruits. This is an amazing wine with subtle layers of fruit and a berry intensity that shows finesse in every sip. ($13.99)

2006 Clos de los Siete, Argentina. The 2006 Clos de los Siete is a blend of 50% Malbec, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah. Opaque purple-colored, it has an expressive nose including fragrant plum, blueberry, and black cherry. Ripe, sweet and seamless, it admirably hides its tannin under all the fruit. This wine will develop wonderfully over several years, but after tasting it, it may be quite hard for you to wait. Clos de los Siete is a project of Michel Rolland and received 92 points by Robert Parker. ($22.49)

2007 Huber Hugo Grüner Veltliner, Austria. The Huber Hugo Grüner Veltliner is no stranger to the store, but the 2007 vintage has arrived just in time for spring. Fermented in stainless steel, Hugo gives off fresh green apple and fruity aromas. The palate displays flavors of lemon, lime and peaches with a solid fruit core. Rich in finesse this Grüner Veltliner has beautiful length and great mineral tones. This wine is ideal for seafood, white meat and light dishes like salads. Although this wine will pair wonderfully with food, it is equally refreshing by itself on a hot summer day. ($10.99)

    Weekend Wine Tastings

Friday, May 2nd (5 to 8 PM) Ridge Wines

    • 2005 Ridge California Syrah Lytton West. Ridge has just over three acres of mature Syrah and six acres of younger vines at Lytton Springs West. The oldest parcels produced wine of exceptional depth and density; the younger yielded focused fruit and soft, balanced tannins. Five lots were chosen for this fine Syrah, and aged for a total of 21 months in air- dried American oak. Enjoyable now for its forward, spicy fruit, it will develop greater complexity over the next ten years. ($35.99)
    • 2005 Ridge California Santa Cruz Mountains Estate. The 2005 Santa Cruz Mountains Estate consists of 58%Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot. Abundant fruit and richness permitted the winemakers to use a greater percentage of new and one-year-old air-dried American oak in aging. Twenty-one months in barrel has brought integration and clarity. This wine has an elegant structure and flavors of rich, briary fruit typical of the Santa Cruz Mountains estate. An excellent vintage, this wine will continue to develop over the next 12-14 years. ($39.99)
    • 2006 Ridge California Zinfandel Paso Robles. The fruit for this wine came from Dusi Ranch, which is known for its forward fruit and soft tannins. This vintage saw 13 months of barrel aging in 100% air-dried American oak. Rich fruit and the spice of barrel aging are beautifully balanced in this accessible Zinfandel. It will be at its best over the next five years. ($29.99)
