Greetings!
As you may know, yesterday I attended an intimate luncheon with renowned chefs and entrepreneurs Joe and Lidia Bastianich along with other food and wine friends, Siena Restaurant owner Chris Tarro and Gracie's Restaurant Executive Chef Joe Hafner just to name a couple. We ate and sampled wines at the new Providence restaurant Tini, opened by Al Forno owners Johanne Killeen and George Germond.
As I expected, Lidia was easy to talk to, interested in what I cook most and whether little Sienna would learn to speak Italian. To the latter I replied, "Ma si!" It was exciting to hear Lidia share her experience with emigrating to the US and her culinary prowess, done in a way that downplayed her fame. Joe's passion for his family businesses and wine resonated with me too.
Please join us on Friday to taste the new vintages and selections from the Bastianich family and famed chef Mario Batali, who has partnered with Joe and Lidia. We also will have Lidia's book, Lidia's Italy, and Joe's book Vino Italiano available for purchase, the perfect gifts for any food and wine lover.
Come in and enjoy some truly classic Italian wines. |

This Week's Savory Selections
2008 Bastianich Rosato, Friuli, Italy. Made from 100% Refosco, known for producing spicy reds with dark fruit flavors, this Rosato expresses itself in a refreshing way with aromatic intensity and unexpected weight on the palate for a Rosato. Welcoming aromas of plums, rose petals, violets and orange peel prepare you for the medium-weight palate featuring fresh, clean mouth-watering acidity. This is great as an aperitif or with smoky, sweet and spicy cuisine. ($15.49)
2006 La Mozza I Perazzi, Maremma, Italy. I Perazzi, the foundation of Bastianich's La Mozza winery, was created to be unlike most typical Morellino di Scansano. Named after the pear-like fruit that grows on the vineyard, I Perazzi is a blend of mostly Morellino (Sangiovese in Maremma), Syrah, Alicante, Colorino and Ciliegiolo, creating juicy dark fruit flavors that mingle with spice and licorice. Bright, ripe cherry and soft texture make this a perfect match with fresh Mediterranean dishes. ($15.99)
2008 Bastianich Sauvignon "B," Friuli, Italy. This was a great starter for the luncheon at Tini with Joe and Lidia. It shows great complexity along with its typical freshness. Aromas of mint, citrus and tropical fruit bring you to a fresh and elegant palate with good acidity and a long, refreshing finish. Pair Sauvignon "B" with antipasti, fish, vegetable soups or omelets with herbs and risotto with asparagus. ($15.99) |

Saturday, May 2nd, 3 to 7 PM - Artist Opening Reception
2008 Angove Nine Vines Viognier, South Australia. This 100% Viognier exudes lush ripe tropical fruit aromas. Its fuller-bodied style fills the mouth with heady flavors of apricot, peach and citrus notes.Great by itself while relaxing, the Nine Vines Viognier is also an ideal partner for grilled prawns or roasted pork. ( $13.49)
2008 Lurton Pinot Gris, Argentina. Our favorite Pinot Gris are usually from Oregon and Alsace, but this Argentine one is light, fresh, beautiful and great for the upcoming warm spring and summer seasons. It has loads of citrus & tropical fruits but finishes dry. A great choice! ($11.49) 2005 Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna, Italy. An intense bright ruby red color gives way to pleasant aromas of strawberry, raspberry jam and hints of smoke. Inviting flavors of coffee, spice and wild herbs lead to a full, round and fruit forward palate. This is a user-friendly, food-friendly, medium-bodied red. ($15.99)
