Greetings!
The new wine tasting dinners held the first Tuesday of each month at Siena Restaurant in EG have become a hot commodity. The three-course dinners have garnered a packed house at Siena, selling out the last two months with the upcoming April one already sold out too. A smaller combination of great food and great wine has been proving enjoyable and successful. We have listened to your feedback, and since the event is held the same time each month (the first Tuesday), you can now make your reservation in advance, even before the final menu and wines have been selected. We hope this will allow you to plan ahead for any gift giving needs.
Enjoy ~ The Savory Grape Team |

This Week's Savory Selections
2006 Blue Pirate Pinot Noir, Oregon. Oregon's Willamette Valley is renowned for Pinot Noir, and Blue Pirate is produced from some of the best grapes grown there. A great story exists behind this label. Blue Pirates are blue birds that would sit in trees outside the Westnut Hazelnut Factory in Dundee, Oregon and steal nuts from delivery trucks, drop them on the ground and break the shells. The birds would then swoop down and grab the nuts for food, leaving the shells behind. These swashbuckling birds were hence named Blue Pirates. Westnut produced packaged hazelnuts and named the product "Blue Pirate Filberts." This Pinot Noir is made at this renovated historical building, now called "12th and Maple Wine Company" and is dedicated to the Blue Bird that once pirated the hazelnuts - the Blue Pirate.
We were impressed with this Oregon Pinot under $20, often a hard item to come by today. The wine has a nose of fresh candied red and black cherries, toast and vanilla. It offers forward flavors of cherries, plums, earth, spice and hints of minerality with a light to medium bodied attack. Come enjoy on Friday. ($18.99)
2006 Lucashof Riesling, Pfalz, Germany. The 2006 vintage of this lightly off-dry white wine shows bright attractive aromas of ripe pears, melons and hint of petrol with just a nip of sweetness but of course yielding to a drier finish on the end. The wine is delicate with an attractive mineral acidity, just what Germany's classic grape is known for. If you are planning ahead this would be a great selection for Easter. ($11.99)
2007 Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand. (Coming Friday.) This small production New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc we think outperforms some of its rival counterparts. It displays an aromatic mix of green fruits with underlying ripe tropical aromas adding complexity. Some hints of pineapples and passion fruit with mild herbaceous characters linger on a textured palate giving great mouthfeel with an enduring, structured and well balanced finish. The perfect new wine for Spring. ($14.99)
2006 Planeta La Segreta, Sicily, Italy. This Sicilian blend of Nero d'Avola, Syrah, Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc was the big hit of the evening at the Siena wine dinner last week. It is refreshing on the nose with notes of cherries, plum and red currant. Velvety tannins, a pleasant softness and just the right acidity on the palate make this a very easy drinking and friendly wine. Come try! ($16.49)
Stimulus Selections (Click for full list) 2006 Chateau Suau Bordeaux Blanc (Featured last week, this wine received great reviews and we have been able to keep the price down. $10.99, Reg: $15.99)
Seavey Caravina Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley ($23.99, Reg: $35.99) |

Saturday, March 7th - New Italian Selections
2007 Vignarco Orvieto, Umbria, Italy. This Orvieto, from the porous limestone soils of southern Umbria, shows graceful and classic attributes of delicate wildflower and fresh-mown hay in the bouquet. The palate displays a soft, dry texture in the mouth with a hint of mild nuttiness and citrus fruits. ($12.99)
2004 Bravo Marco Bravo Rosso, Italy. Featured as a Savory Selection last week this wine sold out quickly. It represents a bit of old world as well as a strong entry into the new world of Italian wine. Utilizing a unique and exciting blend of Sangiovese and Primitivo, Bravo Marco Bravo is a warm and friendly wine exuding fresh and jammy red fruit aromas. Lush flavors of plums and blackberry flood the palate making this wine easy to drink and pair with a wide variety of foods. ($11.99, Reg: $15.49)
2006 Planeta La Segreta, Sicily, Italy. Please see tasting notes above in this week's Savory Selections. ($16.49)
