Greetings!
Almost rarely am I reluctant about drinking wine from unknown regions. After all that is what we encourage you to do - try new wines. However last evening I surprisingly had a moment of apprehension about sharing a bottle of red wine from Slovenia with a friend who was visiting us. The wine was given to us from one of my husband's colleagues who he visits in Slovenia.
Unable to speak Slovene or understand the label, I had no idea what we were in for with this bottle. I knew with only 11.5% alcohol, which I could understand, the wine had to be relatively light. The label also donned the words "Redci Cuvee" which I deduced to mean Red Blend. (After searching the Internet, I was indeed right about that.) The wine tasted maybe like Pinot Noir or even an Italian Dolchetto, a possibility since Italy isn't that far away. After using Google to search for every bit of information that was on the label, I still have no idea what we drank, except that is was dry (Suho). However, the three of us, even our friend who is a full bodied wine drinker, enjoyed it. So my quest to determine and share with you what we had continues. Until then, enjoy the new and different. |

This Week's Savory Selections
Peirano Estate "The Other White," Lodi, California. Last week we introduced "The Other" Red and now we release "The Other" White, both which we will taste this weekend. We are immediately struck by the vibrant color of this Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier blend. The aromas of apples, pears, tropical fruit and a whiff of bubble gum are complemented by hints of coconut and vanilla. Lush flavors of fresh ripe pears, apples, tropical fruit and homemade lemon pie lead to a long, totally seductive, finish. ($13.99)
2006 Fausti Rosso Piceno "Fausto," Italy. A blend of 60% Montepulciano and 40% Sangiovese creates a deep purple color with scents of violets, wild cherry and pleasant oak undertones. The palate is clean and crisp with wild cherry flavors, touches of oak and a long lingering finish. A bottle of Fausto with Tagliatelle alla Bolognese is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face. This was one of the wines we tasted with Rick Pignataro of Angelini Wines. Pair with a tasty favorite recipe. ($14.99)
2006 Chateau Suau, Bordeaux, France. This white Bordeaux is a blend of three varietals - Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle. The wine has been aged on fine lees (the wine's dead yeast cells) for three months which adds texture and creaminess without using the integration of oak. This expressive and refreshing wine reveals honeysuckle and white peach aromas. On the palate, it has excellent depth of citrus fruit and honey that leads you through to a great finish. ($12.99; Reg: $15.99)
2004 Bravo Marco Bravo Rosso, Italy. Bravo Marco Bravo represents a bit of the old world as well as a strong entry into the new world of Italian wine. Utilizing a unique and exciting blend of Sangiovese and a touch of Primitivo, it is a warm and friendly wine exuding fresh and jammy red fruit aromas. Lush flavors of plums and blackberry flood the palate making this wine easy to drink and pair with a wide variety of foods. ($12.49, Reg. $15.99)
2005 Gran Chamán Reserva Malbec, Chile. Malbec from Chile, really? We questioned it too, but once we tasted it all doubts went away. An intense, deep, dark ruby color delivers pleasant aromas of cedar and fresh fruit notes of cherries and plums followed by a hint of coffee. A lively acidity lends a fresh start to a very pleasant palate with a backdrop of red fruit and violets. The finish is intense and persistent staying true to the Gran Chamán style. ($15.99, Reg. $21.49) |
