  • Greetings!

Just a few days ago one of our wine club members brought to our attention a New York Times article that touched us and that we wanted to share with you. Although we can't come close to the subject's wine collection, we can absolutely relate to his passion. Please click here for the full article.

Additionally, last week we had the pleasure of attending a tasting of Rosenblum Cellars' wines, renowned wines which are familiar to many for their big, rich, luscious Zinfandels. In addition to some of Rosenblum's usual offerings, there were several reserve wines that were outstanding and brought in only for us to taste! We are thrilled to tell you that we will sample some of these at this Saturday's wine tasting during the opening reception for artist Claire Marschak. Please see our weekend tasting notes below to catch a previouw of these wines. We also will bring in a couple additional selections in the coming weeks. We hope you will join us for an exciting evening of great wine and art.

    This Week's Savory Selections

1995 Terra Nostra Chianti Classico Riserva, Italy. An older wine that we think is just stellar and is drinking beautifully now. It has a medium body and rich texture but is nicely balanced in red berry fruit flavors, oak and acidity that makes this offering smooth and rounded. It is velvety smooth in the mouth with a soft and supple finish. This is a wonderful pairing for many Italian dishes. ($21.99)

2005 Rosenblum Viogner "Kathy's Cuvee" (Available Friday). What a lovely aromatic, floral white that is a superb alternative to Chardonnay. The Viognier grape produces a wine that is both exotic and seductive. The grape originates from the tiny and very steep hillside appellation of Condrieu in the Northern Rhône Valley of France. This selection possesses beautiful aromas of apricots and peaches gently touched by vanilla and cinnamon. A palate loaded with honeydew melon, apricots, rich vanillas, subtle hints of tropical fruit and just a touch of toastiness complete this elegant wine. We think it is a beautiful white selection from a predominantly red producer that is perfect for drinking now. ($19.49)

2003 Rosenblum Base Camp Syrah (Available Friday). Our words for this selection are big, luscious, fruity, yet dry, and overwhelmingly smooth. Upon inspection, the color is opaque with a beautiful rich purple color. It has room-filling aromas of blackberries, plum, licorice and cracked black pepper that are stunning. The lush palate, loaded with black and blueberries, and black currants lightly laced in vanilla and spice is compelling. We look forward to sharing this with you at the Saturday tasting. ($14.99)

2004 Rosenblum Zinfandel "Aparicio" (Available Friday). What a big, big Zin! The palate and nose are filled with intense black cherry that is rounded out by subtle vanilla bean notes in this powerhouse of a wine. Big and brambly you will notice the spice emanating from the glass. "Aparicio" is the last name of Iris and Joe who tend to this quarter-century-old, vineyard with loving care and respect. While many would hire help to prune and maintain the vines, Joe is very proud of the fact he is the only person who has worked the vineyard. Again, another sampling for Saturday. ($25.99)

2005 Haras Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Maipo Valley, Chile. It might seem difficult to follow in the footsteps of the big Rosenblum wines, but this Chilean Sauvignon Blanc is big and intense in its own right. It's mouthfilling with intense gooseberry, citrus and tropical fruit notes that give you an exceptional mouthwatering quality. It has an exceptionally crisp finish reminiscent of green apples and herbs. ($12.49)

    Weekend Wine Tastings
    Cosentino

Friday, February 23 (5 pm to 8 pm)

    • 2004 Cosentino The Zin. Exotically spicy and rich, this Zinfandel from California's Lodi area is black fruit oriented with aromas and flavors of boysenberry, blackberry and black cherry. It is exceptionally rich and jammy, with a stunning intensity. It shows amazing quality as many of the Cosentino wines do. ($23.99)
    • 2003 Cosentino Sangiovese. A nice blend of plums, black cherries and anise highlight the nose and are then delivered in a full package on the palate. Nuances of oak are evident, yet they offer a pleasant roundness that balances out the fruit. ($18.49)
    • 2005 Cosentino The Chard. Cosentino winery focuses on small, distinctive vineyard lots, allowing the fruit sources and varietal characteristics to determine all of its blends. Medium bodied and dry, you will note floral and apple nuances on the nose, while the palate is full of baked apple, cream and citrus flavors. The finish is exceptionally long, smooth and silky. ($14.99)

Saturday, February 24 (6 pm to 9 pm) Claire Marschak Art Opening. During this evening, we will taste Rosenblum Cellars' Viognier "Kathy's Cuvee, Base Camp Syrah and "Aparicio" Zinfandel, all described above in the Savory Selections section. Please come join us for a wonderful evening.
