  • Greetings!

As we know, February is synonymous with Valentine's Day. And, if you are one who will be recognizing that day we have tried to make things simple for you by offering gift suggestions for that special person in your life. See the article below containing our recommendations.

February is also synonymous with heart disease awareness. Friday, February 6th is Wear Red Day, a national movement by the American Heart Association to raise awareness of women and heart disease by encouraging people to wear red, whether a red T-shirt, tie or dress. Donning red on Friday will show your support. Additionally, coming into The Savory Grape on Friday to share red wine with us during our tasting will also show your support. We will be tasting a variety of big, bold red wines and will donate a portion of the sales from these wines to the RI American Heart Association. So come taste and buy to show your support in the fight against heart disease in women. To learn more, visit the American Heart Association at www.americanheart.org.

    Insignia

    For the Collector:

2005 Joseph Phelps Insignia, California. Insignia, rated 95 pts. by Robert Parker and 92 pts. by Wine Spectator, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot from selected estate-owned vineyards throughout Napa Valley. Deeply colored, concentrated and layered, with floral, anise, black cherry and graphite aromas, this wine is classically structured with excellent acidity, well- balanced tannins and a mouth-staining, persistent finish. The wine is in need of at least 2-3 years of bottle age and for any seasoned collector, this wine should last for 25-30 years. ($195.99) Buy Now!

2004 Brovia "Rocche dei Brovia" Barolo, Italy. Receiving an outstanding 93 pts. from Robert Parker, Rocche dei Brovia offers perfumed ripe red berries, fresh flowers and spices. This is a poised, feminine Barolo of notable elegance. A touch of sweetness from the French oak lingers on the long finish. This is typically the most accessible of the Brovia single- vineyard Barolos, as it is again in 2004. Look forward to enjoying this elegant wine betweeen 2012-2024. ($86.99) Buy Now!

    For the Novice:

2007 Tormaresca Neprica, Italy. A recent selection at a Siena wine dinner, this is a blend of Negroamaro, Primitivo and Cabernet Sauvignon. (Hence the name Ne Pri Ca.) It creates a wine with lush ripe berry notes, cassis, molasses and cola, and delivers a thick texture with succulent smooth tannins and great length. This value-packed red offers layers of raspberry, plum and black cherry fruits on the nose and palate, with light, spicy notes of licorice and a long finish for such an inexpensive wine. More will be coming in this week. ($12.99) Buy Now!

2007 Joel Gott Zinfandel, California. Produced from old- head-trained vines in Lodi and Amador, this wine is intense and well structured with great power, depth and complexity. Fruit is also sourced from the cooler climate of Sonoma County to offer the classic Zinfandel aromatics of pepper and anise. Together, these diverse regions produce a Zinfandel packed with flavors of licorice, plums, Bing cherries and blackberries that also offer a deep, long finish. ($17.99) Buy Now!

    For the Romantic:

Gruet Brut Rosé, New Mexico. This nearly garnet colored Rosé, like all of Gruet's non-vintage sparkling wines, is aged for 24 months. It has a lovely, bright floral bouquet with hints of strawberry, raspberry and cherry. On the palate, it is rich and fruity in a dry, Brut style. The flavor of berries continues on the palate, revealing more strawberry, raspberry and cherry. This sparkler is lots of fun and very festive, but production is limited to 5000 cases per year, so don't miss out! ($18.99) Buy Now!

Guy Larmandier Brut Rosé, 1er Cru Champagne, France. Medium pink in color, this Champagne displays aromas of fresh cranberry and blood orange on the nose, with a fine dusting of minerals adding vivacity. The palate gives way to more fleshy strawberry and cranberry flavors that finish with a serious chewy grip and depth. What's more romantic than pink bubbly? ($55.99) Buy Now!

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Peter Paul Merlot

2001 Peter Paul Merlot, California. How lucky we were to obtain this delightfully, delicious 2001 Merlot. It displays prominent aromas and flavors of cherry, boysenberry and blackberry together with characteristics of vanilla and spice. The body shows a delightful balance of fruit and richness in the mouth, with a firm clean finish. This wine is in its prime right now and lingers beautifully on the palate. ($18.99)

2007 Vignarco Orvieto, Umbria, Italy. This Orvieto, from the porous limestone soils of southern Umbria, just North of Rome, shows graceful and classic attributes of delicate wildflower and fresh-mown hay in the bouquet. The palate displays a soft, dry texture in the mouth with a hint of mild nuttiness. ($12.99)

2006 Wolfberger Pinot Gris, Alsace. The 2006 vintage of this Pinot Gris is powerful and well structured. The wine is round and rich offering wonderful citrus fruit aromas and flavors with some toasty and spicy notes. This is a gem from a little unknown vineyard. Many of you loved this vineyard's Pinot Blanc that we tasted last weekend. It will be excellent as an aperitif or to be enjoyed with grilled poultry, game and rich, fatty French cheeses. ($15.99)

2006 Peirano Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, California. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from 30 year-old vines, was aged 12 months in French oak barrels. The rich, dark color of this wine catches you from the first pour. The aromas are a compendium of dark fruit - blackberry, black raspberry, currant and toasty oak. A sip fills the mouth with blackberry pie, hints of rich, ripe black cherries, sweet oak and white pepper, while maintaining absolute dryness. Ready to drink now, it will continue to age gracefully for the next 6 to 8 years. This will arrive on Friday. ($13.49)
