  • Greetings!

It seems that no matter what happens in our lives things don't always go as planned. This is true in the world of wine as well. Last night, I had plans to celebrate a friend's 40th - a casual affair with friends, laughs and Bellinis.

However plans changed when my husband, Nino, called to say he would be at the office longer than expected. So instead of Bellinis with the gals I was preparing for sushi with the guys. (My husband was having an out-of-town business colleague over for dinner.) I pulled out a bottle of Pinot Noir to pair nicely with the sushi, but Nino's colleague eyed an old Italian Amarone in our rack. Despite the food-wine mismatch we wanted to accommodate our guest. Concerned about its pairing with delicate sushi, I poured us each a glass. After one sip, none of us cared about its pairing. Another change in plans, we loved that beautiful Italian, which didn't last long, and the sushi too. So as we did, with wine sometimes it's about enjoying what you like and changing the plan.

Enjoy some of our new selections at the shop.

See you soon, Jessica, Nino & The Savory Grape Team

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Frontier Red

Fess Parker Frontier Red Lot 81, California. This wine from Fess Parker Winery, which served as the set in the Frass Canyon scene in the famed movie "Sideways," is made in the same down to earth spirit as the frontiersman who tamed this land. A complex and big blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Mouvedre, Cinsault and Carignane shows lush red and black fruit flavors complemented by enticing spice, vanilla and oak notes. Nice, rounded and bold. ($14.99)

2007 Milton Park Shiraz, South Australia. This Aussie red first grabs your attention with its deep red color. From there your nose will be treated to complex aromas of bitter chocolate and thyme. Rounding things, it offers a lovely, creamy mouthfeel accompanied by soft tannins, plum and raspberry to make this one very enjoyable wine. ($13.49)

2007 Tomero Torrontes, Argentina. Coming from vineyards at 5,600 feet above sea level, this bright yellow wine offers aromas of roses, orange blossoms and jasmine. Often thought of as a spring white, this wine may help you think warm thoughts during the next few months. A recent wine club selection, its mouth feel is lush and creamy. ($15.99)

2005 Tomero Cabernet Sauvignon, Argentina. Tomero's Cabernet Sauvignon has been aged in stainless steel and oak barrels. The finished product is a ruby red wine with complex and spicy aromas. In the mouth it has an almost sweet entrance with loads of black berry flavors and a gentle, persistent finish. ($15.99)

2006 Pares Balta Mas Petit, Spain. Organic, Mas Petit is a versatile wine that is easy and pleasing to the palate. Its deep cherry color and its aromas of red fruits cover a background of toasty notes and vanilla leading to a soft and smooth palate. This Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha (Grenache) blend is best enjoyed relatively young, from 3 to 5 years from the vintage. ($13.49)
