  • Greetings!

Regardless of political affiliation, today marked a momentous time in presidential history. Lucky to have today off (not purposefully planned), I was able to watch the inaugural activities with a friend and my one-year old daughter. I had a chuckle when my daughter clapped after hearing clapping on the TV from crowd-goers on the Washington Mall. She too wanted to be part of this history.

Although I previously lived in Washington, DC for both the Clinton and Bush presidencies, I don't remember feeling the immense patriotism that I felt today - maybe it's because MLK's dream came true or maybe it's because a new administration often brings new hope. Regardless, we've come a long way in history, and it feels good to be an American. So for tonight raise your glass of wine with me and toast for better days ahead!

See you soon, Jessica, Nino & The Savory Grape Team

    Surprising Growth in Wine
    Generation Drinking

With the slowing economy and retail sales and restaurants suffering, consumer confidence has seen much better days. Although things seem gloomy, there may be a positive road ahead for the wine industry, and we hope others too.

The Wine Market Council, an industry promotional group, sees promising trends for the wine industry in 2009. According to a recent study, the Council found that wine consumption has increased for the 15th year in a row. Findings also revealed that two thirds of those surveyed reported spending the same amount per bottle for wine and for the most part the same was true for respondents who purchased wine in a restaurant.

Over the last eight years the number of wine drinkers has increased by 60%, and the most positive trend has been among the younger generations: Generation X and Millennials. The greatest growth has come from the Millennials, of course those of legal drinking age, 21-32. Millennials have accounted for stunning growth in the core wine-drinking population, doubling that of Generation-Xers against minimal or declining figures for Baby Boomers. Many believe the Millennials are the future of the wine industry, and their numbers continue to increase as they are more optimistic about the economy.

    This Week's Savory Selections
    Paruccie Sustainable Red

2005 Parducci Sustainable Red, California. Parducci has long been known for its sustainable farming and earth friendly ways. To add to its already lengthy list of organic wines comes its Sustainable Red. A blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel, it displays nice jammy, blackberry flavors and aromas that are accompanied by a nice balance of acid to make a well structured inexpensive selection. This is a great everyday wine that can be enjoyed with a variety of foods from polenta with sausage and peppers to a white chicken chili. ($9.99)

2007 Parducci Sustainable White, California. The other half of the Sustainable series is the white - a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Tokai and Viognier. Crisp and clean with citrus, melon and honeysuckle flavors and aromas, this refreshing white is great with pasta salads, grilled and roasted chicken dishes (sans a tomato base) and many vegetable-based dishes. Try the Vegetable Quiche sometime at EG's Greenwich Bay Gourmet with this wine - YUM! ($9.99)

2005 Donna Marzia Primitivo, Salento, Italy. The Primitivo grape from the heel of Italy may or may not be the ancestor of Zinfandel - but it sure delivers the goods the same way! Delicious, brambly fruit in a well- rounded friendly style, wine like this has been made in the area for at least two thousand years. Practice makes perfect. ($11.99)

2006 Terra Noble Reserva Merlot, Chile. We couldn't be more happy with this new Chilean Merlot. Terra Noble's Reserva Merlot exudes rich aromas of ground coffee beans, currant and blackberry. The rich coffee flavor reappears on the palate with a fruity back bone, elegant tannins and smooth, but dry finish. Delightful! ($13.99)
