    Weekend Wine Tastings
    Gascon Malbec

Friday, January 12 (5 pm to 8 pm) A Southern Hemisphere Tasting

    • 2005 Don Miguel Gascon Malbec: Located in the Andes Mountains, Mendoza is the area where most of the fine wine in Argentina originates. It's quickly becoming known as the Napa of South America. The Gascon wine is a deeply concentrated, dark, rich, inky purple in color with aromas of blackberries, mint and rosemary. This medium to full- bodied wine is loaded with dark fruit flavor and a charming dry, rustic quality. Bigger and more structured than other Malbecs, this is a wine that demands a porterhouse steak to keep it company. ($11.99)
    • 2003 Wildekrans Pinotage: The South Africans really know their red wines, and the 2003 Wildekrans Pinotage is a great example of their winemaking prowess. Sourced from a single, low yielding vineyard, this 100% Pinotage is a soft, velvety and generous drinking wine with explosive ripe lingering fruit. The wine is deep violet in color with floral and raspberry aromas. It can be served with numerous foods including BBQ’d chicken and meat, steak, pizza and nachos. ($15.99)
    • 2004 In Situ Syrah: The Cabernet from this vineyard has been very well received by Savory Grape customers, so we tried the Syrah and this is another winner! This Chilean wine is bright red with purple highlights and is aged in French and American oak for one year. The aroma has hints of violets, raspberries and spice. On the tongue you will experience a smooth texture with a finishing taste of crème brule. No kidding! This wine would be great with lamb, duck or a spicy chicken dish. ($12.49)
    • 2005 Ken Forrester Sauvignon Blanc: Another South African favorite, this light Sauvignon Blanc shows full complex ripe fruit with a crisp, dry finish. It offers tropical fruit on the nose with an excellent tart sherbet mouthfeel and long tropical pineapple, melon finish. Refreshing, particularly on these balmy winter days of late. ($13.99)

Saturday, January 13 (3 pm to 7 pm) Wines of Unique Nature

    • 2004 Cline Ancient Vine Mourvedre: Cline Zinfandel may be familiar to you, but Cline also produces well its Mourvedre - an exotic grape varietal found typically in the Rhone and Provence regions of France and Spain and Australia. The yields of this ancient vine wine are restricted thereby achieving an expression of dusty berry fruit characteristic. It also offers distinct chocolate characteristics and a luscious deep plum flavor that makes it a great partner for pork tenderloin with a bing cherry sauce. ($15.99)
    • Easton Natoma Sierra Foothills White: Located on the West Slope of the Sierra Nevada in the Shenandoah Valley, Easton wines are unique and one- of-a-kind. This particular white is an interesting oak aged and fermented blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The Semillon gives it a roundness and creaminess, yet it is balanced by lush papaya and fig flavors and vanilla spice, likely from fermentation in oak barrels. This is a nice, unique find that you should try! ($13.49)
